Why the Mavs do it.

The Mavericks have two huge problems they need to address this offseason: rebounding and interior defense. This trade would be a huge start to solving those issues. Capela is a great rebounding C, and a top-tier rim protector as well. He also is one of the very best pick-and-roll bigs in the NBA, and would flourish with Luka and Kyrie passing to him.

The Mavs can next use the exceptions available to them to shore up their depth by signing a guy like Torrey Craig, and suddenly they begin looking like a much more complete team again. They could then even still move their 2025 pick if needed, or if they tank the rest of the year, they could add a lottery pick as well this season.

Why the Hawks do it.

The Hawks are in desperate need of shooting. They have lost Danilo and Huerter in recent years, and they could love Bogi as well this off-season. Bringing Hardaway back gives them a bonafide shooter into their backcourt, and a guy who has experience playing next to ball-dominate guards, who has to be respected on the perimeter at all times. They can move Capela because Okongwu needs to be paid and moved into the starting lineup. This trade lets them shore up their weakness using an asset at a position of strength. They would become better rounded and balanced with this trade. They would also gain a future pick swap for future potential moves.
