Knicks shake up the roster, Hawks land AD, Laker form a big three, and Mavs get picks, cap space, and a young player.
Why the teams might do this trade
Knicks - Recent struggles. KAT has seen a decline in fg efficiency and can be a defensive liability. That combine with a huge cap hit. The Knicks are really limited in how they improve their roster. What are the getting Daniel Gafford is a very good rim protector and good rebounder. Vanderbilt is a good defender with a high motor and very good rebounder. Rui Hachmiura is an efficienty perimeter shooter, but not the best defender. Russel adds a solid back up veteran PG who is a playmaker. They get better defensively and really don't lose offensive. For a team trying to win it all now this is a win now trade. The pick swap probably ends up being meaningless. The Washington pick this year probably ends us turning into 2 2nd rds picks since Washington is likely going to get a 1-8 pick.
Hawks - AD The Hawks value AD, why? No one knows. Ok for the 20 games AD will play each year he will be elite. But really the Hawks add AD who slides into the PF position, allowing Jalen Johnson to play SF. Yasbusele is a physical stretch big with good three point range. He's also a good transition offensive player, but not great on defense. The Hawks lose Risacher but only lose this years pick which will end up being a late 1st probably. No future picks and the keep the NOP pick swap. This trade helps them next year when they add another lottery pick to the team and hopefully (but probably not) a healthy AD.
Lakers - New Big Three - but really big two The Lakers loose several depth players but nothing of note. They get KAT who hopefully rebounds from his bad year. He plays with Luka one of the best shot creators and floor spacers in the league. They can add some FG bench vets to round out the roster this year. They give up a first, which will probably be a late-round pick, but they still protect it is top 3. They get some big relief next year (with LBJ coming off the books) and can start to build around a new duo of KAT, Luka, and Reeves.
Mavs - Officially start the Flagg era The prize for the Mavs is Risacher and cap space. The Atlanta pick this year will likely end up being San Antonio's pick (late first). The Knicks lose the protected Washington pick, which probably won't convey this year. (unless Washington has some very bad lottery luck). Trey Young won't be back until after the trade deadline and Washington has no reason to rush him back this year. So this protected pick likely becomes 2nd round picks in 2027 and 2028. The Mavs don't have picks in 2027 and owe OKC a swap in 2028 (they also don't have a 2nd in 2028). Knicks give a swap in 2030 and the Lakers give up a 2031 unprotected 1st. Is this a great haul for the Mavs probably not, but the cap space is great and recouping some draft capital is a good start.
Am I crazy or does this deal work for every one?
