Could this actually work?
The Thunder are rich with picks. They have a window to win now. So they make a huge splash for Giannis. After the WCF maybe they don't think Chet can handle Wemby. Chet was by advanced metrics better than Giannis defensively lsat year, but the Thunder were a much better team defense than the Bucks. Giannis is the better rebounder and passer than Chet so maybe that opens up more room for the Thunder. But this requires they decline the player option with Hartenstein to get under the 2nd apron.
Thunder starting lineup after trade: PG - SGA SG - McCain/Wallace SF - Jalen Williams PF - Giannis C - TBD
The Thunder need to figure out were they can get a Center. They keep 17 in this year's draft. Can they get Morez Johnson? Steinbach? Chris Cenac? Veesaar? The last two should definitely be there at 17, the other two probably aren't. But the Thunder could use some capital to move up if they want either of those players. The Thunder would also have the smaller MLE to sign a veteran center. Does Vucevic interest you? Probably not. Could you swing a sign and trade for Walker Kessler? Probably not. The Thunder retain 19 draft picks including a FRP ever year except 2028. They get 4 FRPs and tons of cap space. They need to rebuild
The Mavs land Chet to pair with Flagg up front. But his Contract is huge. So the Thunder give the Mavs their 2028 pick swap back. Also the 2026 Thunder pick is already Mavs property so this trade just adds it to reflect what the Thunder have left. Mavs get the 2026 2nd pick back. Mavs lineup would be:
PG - 2026 Draft Pick (Flemming/Brown)?? SG - Kyrie SF - Flagg PF - Chet C - Gafford/Lively
The Bucks get PJ Washington. Two tradeable 1 year veterans contracts. Could they flip Dortz for a 1st in 2027 or 2028? Or Thompson for a couple of 2nds? The obvisouly get a bevy of picks. Without Giannis the Bucks would need to rebuild but they have limited resources. Could the Bucks grab a young Guard and Forward with 10 and 12 this year? Burries and Yaxel?
