Stephon Castle article (might need to stop making article for a little bit)

Same yap as always, I have no ball knowledge blah blah blah, enjoy!

Born on November 1, 2004, Stephon Castle lived his beginning life in Covington, Georgia, a place known for producing tough basketball talent like Jimmy Clark III. His early experience with the game was strict. And his father, Stacey Castle, was a significant influence on his life. He served as Stephon's first AAU coach. Stacey, who had connections to Connecticut, was known for being tough on Stephon and instilled a no free passes attitude from the beginning. Castle attended Newton High School. His mix of size, agility, and natural instincts on both ends of the court quickly made him a top five star recruit.

Sophomore Year He averaged 13.8 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 3.8 assists, leading the Rams to the 7A state quarterfinals.

Senior Year He excelled with 20.1 points, 9.5 rebounds, and 4.8 assists per game. This performance led to a McDonald’s All-American selection and a gold medal with Team USA in the FIBA U18 Americas Championship.

When Stephon Castle committed to the University of Connecticut (UCONN). He arrived as the crown jewel of Dan Hurley’s 2023 recruiting class it was like they already knew he was the next big thing lol. A consensus five star recruit out of Newton High School in Georgia (as said before). Castle possessed the raw scoring data and playstyle of a traditional future NBA pick. Entering the 2023–24 NCAA season UConn was a veteran heavy squad determined to do what no mens team had accomplished since 2007, repeat as national champions. For a highly touted freshman, breaking into a lineup featuring established stars like Alex Karaban (from the 2026 draft), Cam Spencer (from the 2024 draft) and Donovan Clingan (also from the 2024 draft) meant high expectations. Now obviously Instead of demanding the ball as a primary initiator (the role he dominated in high school) Castle adjusted seamlessly to Coach Hurley's demanding system. He transformed from a high volume point guard into a secondary playmaker who thrived off the ball and completely helped UCONN defensive culture. At 6’6 and weighing at 215 pounds (according to google) Castles physical tools allowed him to become UConn's best perimeter defender. Throughout Big East conference play and whatever else there was that I couldn’t find. Hurley routinely assigned the true freshman to lock down the opposition's best offensive guard or wing or actually nah probably everything at this point lol. Castle utilized his elite lateral quickness, frame, and high basketball IQ to disrupt passing lanes and cook the opposing not very nice or friendly ball handlers (I apologize to the ball handlers he faced for calling them not very nice). Establishing advanced metric ratings that ranked him among some of the best college basketball players in the country.  Although Castles freshman campaign did indeed have hurdles or challenges. An early season minor injury temporarily disrupted his rhythm, but he persevered snd eventually made his return. He finished the season averaging 10.7 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 2.9 assists per game. When the stakes heightened in the NCAA Tournament, Castle elevated his offensive production alongside his locked-down defense: (from what I could find from google)

Sweet 16 vs. San Diego State: Logged a dominant double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds, controlling the glass and pushing the pace.

The Final Four vs. Alabama: With the Crimson Tide pushing the Huskies to the brink, Castle shouldered the offensive load, leading UConn with a stellar 21 points on 7 of 13 shooting to secure an 86–72 victory.

The Spurs went into the 2024 NBA Draft with one goal in mind actually maybe more but what do I know😭😭 anywho it was to find a smart and tough defender and playmaker who can go side by side with Victor Wembanyama I mean cmon getting that what could possibly go wrong for the rest of the NBA. Castle showed up to the draft with a near perfect resume. He was a consensus five star recruit from Newton High School (as said before and before). And already stood out for his versatility. He won Big East Freshman of the Year, and helped his team to a national championship. So when the Spurs picked Castle at number four, their plan was obvious. They signed him in July 2024 to a strong rookie deal, 2 years, $18.67 million. He gives San Antonio a versatile defensive weapon who can do a bit of everything on the perimeter.

Selected 4th overall in the 2024 NBA Draft by the San Antonio Spurs, Castle joined an organization famously built on character and team-first mentalities.

For his rookie season or basically when Castle started out, everyone questioned his outside shot. Teams didn’t even bother chasing him over screens and they just gave him space and dared him to shoot. Instead of falling for the trap, Castle went right at defenders, using his size to get to the rim again and again and again and again and and again… you get the point. He turned those paint touches into the heart of the Spurs attack, piling up free throw attempts and forcing contact whenever defenses collapsed on him. By the middle of his rookie season Castle locked down a starting role. His connection with Wembanyama took off and castle had the patience to thread entry passes through tight spaces and the vision to toss amazing lobs that froze the other team’s men (pause, not in a weird way tho). He suited up for 81 games and started 47. He delivered steady production everywhere, and it wasn’t even close, he ran away with the rookie honors and it was very deserving.

If Castle’s rookie season was about survival and adaptation, his next year season was a masterclass. In October 2025, the Spurs happily (assuming they were) exercised their $10.02 million team option for the 2026–2027 season, validating his status as an untouchable piece of their future. With a full NBA offseason under his belt Stephon Castle returned to the court stronger and far more polished as a perimeter threat. He assumed full-time point guard responsibilities, starting 67 of the 68 regular-season games he appeared in (No 67 joke!!).

On February 7, 2026, Castle delivered a career defining performance that shook the league actually not just that, the world! Jk jk. Facing elite perimeter defenders, he exploded for a career high 40 points, combining relentless rim pressure with a very improved pull up game. This performance silenced critics who questioned his upside as a primary scoring option.

Castle’s stats put him in rare air. Before he even turned 22, he became just the second player in Spurs history to notch multiple triple doubles with at least 10 points, 10 rebounds, and 10 assists. That’s not something you see every day (obviously) especially from a guard who not only crashes the glass but also runs the offense with that old-school, physical edge. By the end of the 2025–26 regular season, Castle was averaging 16.7 points, 7.4 assists, and 5.3 rebounds. And even better, he shot a solid 33.2% from three, making him a real headache to defend in pick and rolls. Teams couldn’t just sag off him anymore lol. If you want to really judge a young and talented point guard, look at what he does in the playoffs. In 2026, Castle didn’t just show up, he took over. The Spurs put the league on notice as they stormed through the Western Conference, topped off by a wild series win against a loaded Oklahoma City Thunder squad. Castle’s composure hit a new level during the Finals against the New York Knicks. At just 21, he had to deal with a relentless, physical defense. And on June 8, 2026 Game 3, with the series completely up for grabs Castle put on a show. He played 38 minutes, led the way with 23 points, 5 rebounds, and 5 assists, and shot 8 for 14 from the floor, including 2 of 5 from deep. The Spurs edged out a 115-111 win, and his fingerprints were all over it. Unfortunately for them they did not win the finals.

Now that we’re done with that career stuff I’ll yap so more about other stuff

So, why does Castle stand out in today’s NBA you may ask? Welp im not answering that😭😭😂😂 jk, He blends the physical style of old school guards with the spacing and pace of the modern game. A lot of analysts love to call him “old-school” because he doesn’t just lean on quickness and he uses leverage, smarts, and timing to get where he wants to go. On defense, Castle’s a nightmare for opponents. He can practically guard anyone from point guards to big wings to Kyle Kuzma!! He steps up at the point of attack, bodies up against bigger players, and routinely shuts down top perimeter threats. His defensive numbers keep him among the league’s elite. And on offense, Castle controls the pace. He’s great at using his size to shield defenders what coaches call “snaking” (learned something new today lol) the pick and roll. Once he has a defender behind him, he just slows the game down and picks them apart. That’s been a game changer for Victor Wembanyama and the spurs team as a whole, Castle almost always finds him on the roll or in space, giving the big man a perfect partner and making the Spurs offense look great.

As Stephon Castle concludes his second full year as a professional, the conversation surrounding his ceiling has shifted. He is no longer just a complementary piece to a larger rebuild and he is a verified star or at least destined to become one if you don’t consider him one already. He’s someone who impacts winning at every level of the game. With a Rookie of the Year trophy on his mantle and an NBA Finals appearance on his resume by just age 21, Castle's professional career is on a trajectory for the truly elite, like Kuzma yk. The San Antonio Spurs wanted a guard who could anchor a culture and in Stephon Castle they found the perfect co architect of their next dynasty.
