Why Toronto makes this deal: The Raptors have done everything to try and make Toronto home enough to get OG to sign an extension, but he's rebuffed all of their attempts to sign him and plans to enter free agency. They've let the likes of VanVleet and Lowry leave for virtually nothing. They must not let Anunoby walk away the same way. The Raptors need to tank to protect their #1 pick from being sent to the Spurs as part of the Poeltl trade, so they make this trade now instead of later.
Tobias provides strong return for an expiring contract. He's a plus offensive and defensive player. They make this move now so they can flip him assets. Springer is the former G League finals MVP and the most lock-down NBA defender under 23. Nwora replaces the lost 3 point shooting.
Why Indiana makes this deal: Hield wants out and the Pacers plan to honor his request. They've wanted a rotation player and a first, but no team has nibbled on that. Trent Jr. gives them a true wing to replace Buddy plus a strong return with a pick swap included.
Gary Trent Jr. has nice size plus upside while replacing much of what Hield offers with some upside. Porter Jr. is a combo forward who provides a potential PF replacement for Obi Toppin in the starting lineup with playoff experience and leadership.
Why Philadelphia makes this deal: While Tobias is an enormous loss, the Sixers solidify their starting lineup with Anunoby. OG doesn't change their chemistry and provides a smooth transition for now and into the future, and Hield provides clutch shooting in the final minutes of games, a needed attribute at SG.
The Sixers get perhaps the most lock-down NBA defender & a Celtics stopper. His basketball IQ is among the best in the game. He doesn't disrupt the Sixers spacing with his ability to stretch the floor. As a wing, Hield provides a deep scoring threat off the bench.
