Why Hawks do this: they need to get what they can for Trae Young. Here, they bring back two expiring contracts, take a chance on Jaden Ivey and see what he has to offer, but they also land three future 1sts and clear up cap space for next offseason.

Why Magic do this: They need offensive creation. Trae Young is one of the best at this. They can hide his defensive issues by pairing him with Black/Suggs and their jumbo wings. They lose Frank Wagner to do this but they also bring in Ron Holland to replace some of Franz’s minutes and keep a defensive wing/forward on the floor with Young.

Why Pistons do this: they need their #2 option and they need an answer at the PF position. Franz fills both of these, fits the timeline, and keeps Detroits defensive mentality. Franz would be a perfect fit in between Duren and Ausar and would take some offensive load off of Cade while still being able to operate as a true #2 and not needing the ball to be productive. Detroit loses three 1sts but if this goes according to lab they would all be in the late 20s anyways. Detroits only asset they lose is Holland as Ivey and Tobias are expiring contracts. I would take Franz over Holland and three late 1sts ANY day. Detroit also uses its TPE to bring in another shooter in Luke Kennard, and open a roster spot to sign Jenkins to an NBA standard contract. Detroit could make another trade to bring in a backup PF too.
