For the Raptors, the #4 pick is a very valuable asset, but it also means bringing in a rookie for a team that is already in a position to be competitive. KAT is right in between the ages of Siakam and OG, and fills the center spot that was such an issue for the Raps this past year. The Raps also have the defensive helpers to cover up KAT's defensive issues. They end up with a starting lineup of FVV-Trent-OG-Siakam-KAT, giving a solid contention window, as all those guys are under control for at least 3 years (assuming any Trent offer sheet is matched), and aged 27 and under.
For the Timberwolves, this is a move to retool around Edwards, and to get ahead of KAT's free agency. The idea is that they pick up Suggs with the #4 pick, who is the floor general of the future they need, and who is also a Minnesota native, who they have a good chance to keep around long term. They also pick up Boucher, the #22 pick from the Lakers, along with a couple of young wings. D'Lo probably also gets moved after this, but the ANT/Suggs combo gives the Wolves a dynamic duo of stars to build around, who are cost controlled and who they should have under team control for 7-8 years.
For the Lakers, they take a mulligan on the failed Lowry trade from the deadline. They keep THT (who they refused to give up then), and basically just match salaries with Kuz and KCP, while giving up the #22 pick. For a team trying to win now with a LeBron/AD core, Lowry is a much better win now piece than those other assets (and still a year younger than LeBron).
