Labaron Philon: The Fall That Could Become an Opportunity

There is something strange about Labaron Philon Jr.’s story. Before the 2026 NBA Draft, his name appeared in very different positions on different mock drafts. Some saw him as a lottery prospect, others had him somewhere between ninth and thirteenth, and some even had him as a possible top-10 pick. Then Draft Night came, and Philon fell all the way to the 22nd pick, where the Philadelphia 76ers decided to take a chance on him.

That difference between expectations and reality is exactly what makes Philon one of the most interesting prospects to watch.

His college career shows a player who changed a lot in a short amount of time. As a freshman, he had already shown interesting qualities on the defensive end. In his second season, however, he became a much more complete and aggressive creator. With the ball in his hands, he looks different. He changes pace, attacks defenders, creates space and constantly looks for a way to make something happen. When you watch him play, there is one word that naturally comes to mind: baller.

And that is what makes his fall to 22nd so surprising.

The concerns are understandable. Philon is small by NBA standards and does not have a particularly powerful frame. Those are legitimate questions. In the NBA, he will have to deal with bigger and stronger guards, and defensively he could struggle against certain matchups. But the Draft is also full of players who get pushed down because scouts try to predict what they will become instead of focusing on what they can already do.

That is what makes Philadelphia such an interesting destination for him.

Philon does not have to arrive and immediately become the face of the franchise. Tyrese Maxey is already ahead of him in the backcourt and gives Philon the chance to develop without having to carry the offense. His job is simple: earn his minutes.

Maybe he gets only a few minutes at first. Maybe that number grows throughout the season. But that is the beauty of his situation: nobody is asking him to become a superstar on Day One.

Being picked 22nd could actually be the perfect situation for him. If he had been selected ninth, every game would come with comparisons to the other lottery picks. In Philadelphia, Philon can develop, learn from Maxey and prove on the court that the concerns about his size do not tell the whole story.

Because in the end, Philon's biggest problem might be this: when you watch him play, it is difficult not to wonder whether scouts put too much weight on what he lacks and not enough on what he can actually do.

That does not mean he is guaranteed to become a star. The NBA is a completely different level, and the concerns about his physical profile exist for a reason. But when a player who was considered by some a potential top-10 pick falls to 22, joins a team where he does not have enormous pressure and only needs to make the most of the minutes he gets, Philadelphia may have found one of the most intriguing gambles of the Draft.

Now the answer will not come from mock drafts, Big Boards or scouts.

It will come from the court.

And for now, Philon just has to do what he does best:

play basketball.
