Why San Antonio?
While Tre Jones played very well down the stretch, it is no secret that SA is still in desperate need of a high level creator to take some of the offensive load off of Wembanyama. Devin Vassell showed flashes of being a solid 2nd option this past season, but with the addition of Simons to take pressure off of him as another guy that teams have to worry about scoring on all 3 levels, Vassell would be able to slide down to be a very good 3rd option offensively.
Simons was one of the most impactful players in the NBA last year in terms of off-ball gravity thanks to his shooting ability. He's shown elite ability in terms of both self-creation and catch and shoot ability from deep. This just happens to be exactly what the Spurs are desperate for right now as one of the worst 3pt shooting teams in the league.
Simons also has experience as an off-ball guard during his time in Portland, playing off guys like Dame Lillard and CJ McCollum. This would allow him to play next to Tre Jones during stretches of games so as to not limit Jones' role on the team past a certain point, considering how well he played after being inserted into the Spurs' starting lineup this year.
Why Portland?
Blazers grab some decent assets in a move that allows them to begin to move into an offense completely built around Scoot, landing two potential top 5 picks in this year's draft. They also grab a guy that can play some minutes on the wing for them in Keldon Johnson and a few young lottery ticket players to go with him.
Ideally they follow this up by moving other vets (Brogdon, Timelord, Grant, Thybulle) for more draft capital and to open up more opportunities for the young players they will be adding as their rebuild progresses.
