Let’s say a team trades one player for 2 players - one that they like, and one that is basically salary filler. The salary filler player has 2 years left on his contract, both with a team option. Can this player’s new team then use the team option right away and cut him, opening usable cap space, or do they have to keep him for the remainder of the current season? If not, will the team still retain the team option for the next season?
