THE 9:00 PM WALL: DO THE TIMBERWOLVES HAVE A BEDTIME?
Iāll be honest: THIS CAUGHT ME COMPLETELY BY SURPRISE.
When I first looked at the standings and realized the Timberwolves are 0ā3 against the Lakers this season, I couldn't wrap my head around it. How does a team this talentedāa legitimate 6th seedāget swept by the same opponent three times? I started digging into the matchups, looking for a tactical reason, but then I saw something that had nothing to do with basketball.
The start times.
It hit me: I donāt even know how most of those Lakers games ended because I went to bed early. Like most people in Minnesota, Iāve got to work the next day. I canāt be up at midnight watching a West Coast collapse. And as I looked at the box scores, a wild realization set in: The Timberwolves might also have a bedtime.
š THE TALE OF THE TAPE: EARLY BIRDS vs. NIGHT OWLS
The stats donāt lie. When the Wolves play at a "reasonable" hour, they are world-beaters. When the sun goes down and the caffeine wears off, things get weird.
⢠Start Time Before 8:00 PM: 36-21 Record (.632 W %)
⢠Start Time 9:00 PM or Later: 4ā6 Record (.400 W %)
When the game starts at 7:00 PM, weāre a top-tier contender. But the moment we hit those late-night West Coast starts, our win percentage falls off a cliff. We aren't just losing games; weāre sleepwalking through them.
š¤ THE LAKERS SERIES: A HALFTIME BEDTIME ROUTINE
The three losses to the Lakers weren't just defeatsāthey were mirrors of each other. In every single game, the Wolves looked like the better team... until the halftime lights dimmed and the "bedtime routine" clearly kicked in.
OCT 24 (9:00 PM START): We dropped 40 points in the first quarter. We were fast, aggressive, and dominant. By the 4th quarter? We managed only 16 points. Thatās not a scoring drought; thatās a collective nap.
OCT 29 (8:30 PM START): Even at home, the late start took its toll. We led after the first, but the energy drained steadily until Austin Reaves stole it at the buzzer while we were likely dreaming of our morning coffee.
MAR 10 (10:00 PM START): The most glaring example. We led after one and were tied at the half. Then the 3rd quarter hit, the Lakers exploded for 39 points, and the Wolves looked like they were ready for their favorite pillows.
š THE REALIGNMENT ARGUMENT: MOVE US EAST!
This is a big reason why the Timberwolves should be moved to the Eastern Conference. It is fundamentally UNFAIR to force a team located in the Central Time Zone to consistently play their biggest games in a window where their bodiesāand their fansāare shutting down.
According to 2026 National Sleep Data, the "Minnesota Profile" is unique. We are one of the best-rested states in the country, but thatās because we have a strict routine. The average adult bedtime in Minnesota is 10:15 PM ā 10:45 PM.
The Wolves clearly live on this East Coast/Central time slot. We are geographically isolated in the West, forced to travel further than almost any other team. Forcing our players to endure 10:00 PM starts against teams like the Lakers is a competitive disadvantage. If we were in the East, where we belong, weād be playing the majority of our games when weāre actually awake!
š THE PLAYOFF CONCLUSION
Currently sitting at the 6th seed, we are lined up to face the #3 Lakers. In a seven-game series, at least half of those games are going to be in Los Angeles with those brutal late starts.
If the Wolves want to survive the first round, they donāt need a new defensive schemeāthey need a nap and a double espresso at the half. Because right now, the Lakers' best player isn't LeBron or Luka; itās the Circadian Rhythm.
Most Minnesotans are in bed by 10:30 PM. If we canāt figure out how to play past our bedtime, this playoff run is going to be over before the late-night news even starts.
