MINNESOTA TIMBERWOLVES

After losing in the second round in six games to the San Antonio Spurs, the Timberwolves decide to upgrade at point guard by trading Julius Randle and Donte DiVincenzo to acquire Ja Morant. With this trade, Minnesota creates the NBA's most athletic backcourt, pairing two elite downhill slashers by pairing Anthony Edwards with Ja Morant in Minnesota. Since Donte DiVincenzo will miss the entire 2026-27 NBA season and Julius Randle not ideal to support future playoff runs in Minnesota upon underachieving in back-to-back postseasons, the Timberwolves should look to switch things up and allow Naz Reid to become their starting power forward. Doing this would give the starters more spacing to work with. With a high floor already established due to the elite fast-paced offense of Anthony Edwards and the standout interior defense of Rudy Gobert, the Timberwolves should look to elevate their ceiling. Ja Morant meaningfully helps them out in this regard, and considering Donte DiVincenzo's unavailability and Julius Randle's reputation, Minnesota's ceiling is raised with Ja Morant as their point guard. Therefore, as they eye a return to the Western Conference Finals, which they made in 2025, the Timberwolves go with this starting lineup:

Ja Morant - Anthony Edwards - Jaden McDaniels - Naz Reid - Rudy Gobert

PHOENIX SUNS

The face of the franchise in Phoenix, Devin Booker, is a natural shooting guard. While he can also facilitate and play point guard, he is better as a scorer and off-ball player. These qualities align better with the shooting guard position than the point guard position. The Suns also have Jalen Green, who is set to make over $30 million over the next two season per year, at shooting guard. Furthermore, the Suns already have the perfect low-usage point guard on their roster whom they can re-sign this summer in free agency in the form of Collin Gillespie. Moreover, like the Timberwolves' void at point guard, the Suns also have a void at the power forward position. Therefore, to better distribute the funds of their team and give Devin Booker a better fit, the Suns decide to trade Jalen Green and their second-round pick in 2029 for Julius Randle. This gives them greater balance, more stability, and a higher chance of making it past the first round. Julius Randle is a better basketball player and a better fit next to Devin Booker in Phoenix. Plus, he has also gone further in the playoffs, making it to at least the second round of the playoffs in his past three postseason runs. For a Suns team that is looking to at least make it to the second round a few more times in the Devin Booker era, Julius Randle can help them get there. As a result, by swapping Jalen Green for Julius Randle, the Suns now create the following starting lineup to open the 2026-27 NBA season in Phoenix:

Collin Gillespie - Devin Booker - Dillon Brooks - Julius Randle - Mark Williams

MEMPHIS GRIZZLIES

With the third pick in the 2026 NBA Draft, the Memphis Grizzlies will likely draft Cameron Boozer. This choice should signal a change of direction for the franchise. They should now move forward with Cameron Boozer (or whomever they select at #3 in the 2026 NBA Draft) as their new franchise player. Especially after trading Desmond Bane to Orlando and Jaren Jackson Jr. to Utah over the course of the past twelve months, the Grizzlies are turning over a new leaf. The Nxt Gen era has concluded in Memphis. Therefore, Ja Morant should be traded by the Grizzlies as well. Even though his value is extremely low at the moment, getting a young player in Jalen Green that can grow transiently with Cameron Boozer, Cedric Coward, and Zach Edey, would be a good pickup for the Grizzlies. Add in the expiring contract of Donte DiVincenzo and a 2029 second-round pick, and this is a quality return for Ja Morant for Memphis. Jalen Green likely will not remain in Memphis past his current contract, but since the Grizzlies are aiming for a high pick in the 2027 NBA Draft to pair with their young trio of Cedric Coward, Zach Edey, and most likely Cameron Boozer, this is perfectly acceptable. Therefore, a package, consisting Jalen Green as a temporal piece, Donte DiVincenzo as a bridge expiring contract, and a 2029 Phoenix second-round pick, works for the Grizzlies. In the interim, as they eye a top pick in the 2027 NBA Draft, the Grizzlies proceed with the following starting lineup to open the 2026-27 NBA season if they are to draft Cameron Boozer:

Ty Jerome - Jalen Green - Cedric Coward - Cameron Boozer - Zach Edey

Overall, this trade should work for all three teams. Minnesota builds the most athletic backcourt, to support the breakneck pace of their franchise player, that the NBA has likely ever seen in order to return to the Western Conference Finals. Phoenix retools by acquiring a better positional fit to support their franchise player. Memphis rebuilds.
