Step 1: Waive D-Lo
Russell doesn't want to play for the team and his lack of defense makes this the best move for both parties.
Step 2: Trade Cam Whitmore
Whitmore's TO has already been exercised, so the Wizards can't just let him go in free agency. His locker room and defensive issues make him an odd man out on this roster. The Wolves need wings around Ant and the Wiz could swoop in and secure a late first to get off his contract.
Step 3: Sign De'Anthony Melton (3yrs/$40M) with a PO as the last year
Melton is a reliable secondary playmaker and perimeter defender to play next to Trae Young. This Wizards have struggled with playmaking and defense, so the addition fixes their main two issues. He also brings a veteran presence to the locker room and can mentor other young guards like Bub Carrington and Jamir Watkins.
Step 4: Sign Mitchell Robinson (3yrs/$41M)
Robinson is a lob-threat center who can hold the defense together when Sarr and Davis are off the court. This move fixes Washington's weak big man rotation and provides Young with easy lob assists.
Step 5: Trade for Tre Jones
This teams whole offensive scheme fall apart without Young on the court, so another primary ball-handler is needed. Jones' defense could allow the Wiz to sub out Young if his defense is starting to lose them the game. This move may come about in next seasons trade deadline to let Bub get some minutes, but the Wiz will definitely need another primary handler to keep the offense flowing.
Step 6: The Draft - #2 - AJ Dybantsa, #29 - Tounde Yessoufou
The biggest hole in this roster a a main 2-way wing with shot creation. Dybantsa is the perfect fit for Washington and could propel this team to an eventual title team later on. With the late first acquired from Minnesota, the Wiz look to refill the bench scoring role they lost by trading Whitmore and Hardy. Yessoufou fits this mold exactly and his defensive tenacity and developing 3-pt shot could make him a dangerous threat if developed correctly.
Wizards Lineup:
T. Young / T. Jones / B. Carrington
D. Melton / T. Johnson / T. Yessoufou
K. George / B. Coulibaly / J. Champagnie
A. Davis / A. Dybantsa / W. Riley
A. Sarr / M. Robinson / T. Vukcevic
Two-Way Deals: S. Cooper, J. Watkins, J. Reese
I would project this team as and 8th~9th seed barring any major injuries
