The reason for these trades is to get off bad money and get back the only outgoing picks that the Wizards have. Cam Whitmore's contract is 5.4M next season, which the Wizards do not want to maximize next season around Trae Young. He has also shown repeated locker room and defensive issues, but can be a solid bench scorer for a team that needs it. The Sixers are 24th in bench PPG and may want to acquire him. The Sixers also gain a draft pick for this year (they would have none otherwise), so they may look to use it to improve the roster in the short run. The Knicks is where this trade gets tricky. The Knicks hold the Wizards' top-8 protected pick this season (with a solid-ish chance to actually go below 8 in the draft), which will convert to the Wizard's 2026 & 2027 second round picks if not conveyed. For this reason, the Knicks would be looking to upgrade their center depth as well as get off a bad contract before even considering a deal. Andre Drummond allows them to not have to rely on Hukporti for minutes if KAT or Robinson get injured and more financial flexibility in the 2026 offseason. They also receive two additional second round picks to not scare them out of the deal. What the Wizards end up with is a vet point guard to guide young players for a bit, a bad contract in Yabusele (but a necessary one to get the 2026 picks back), and all own their own draft capital they have sent out. Having all of their own draft capital makes them fully dependent on themselves for their picks with no need to worry about getting low picks when the team sucks.
