Why Wizard do this Deal?
They get out from under the Beal Contract.
Beal is a Star, but won’t become a Superstar in DC.
They get back a budding star in Maxey and get cap flexibility to shop Harris at the trade deadline
Why 76ers do this Deal?
They don’t have to worry about overpaying Maxey (who does have an injury history).
They can get accomplished vets around Embiid since their window to win is within the next 3 years.
The only have to give up one unprotected pick which won’t kick in (because as Stepien Rules dictate, they can’t give up any additional First Rounders).
Personally, as a Wizards fan, I think it’s a fair deal. DC does NOT do a good job of cultivating talent which is why they have to jettison their Stars in favor of rebuild projects, prospects, and cap relief. Beal would be the perfect pairing for Embiid - someone who stretches the floor, can run the break, and get to the free throw line because he’s not afraid to attack the basket. Beal nearly won a scoring title two seasons ago, and that’s when he was the #1 scoring option. Here, he can flourish alongside Embiid and play for an organization that isn’t afraid to make bold moves and draft intelligently. I love Beal the player and professional, but he needs a new start. Philly is the place. The trade is fair for both teams.
