I wondered something recently. How would football have been different if the NFL stars drafted in the 1960's and 70's were offered more money and went to the AFL? Well, this is what would have happened.
Fran Tarkenton, star Vikings QB, would go to the Patriots if he went to his AFL drafter.
Gale Sayers would go to the Chiefs.
Dick Butkus would be a Bronco.
Carl Eller and Paul Warfield would be Bills.
Charley Taylor would go to the Houston Oilers.
Bullet Bob Hayes would go with Butkus to Denver.
All-time INT leader Paul Krause would also leave Minnesota for the Broncos, who would be an instant powerhouse.
Roger Staubach would be known as a Chiefs legend.
Denver would get ANOTHER superstar in Merlin Olsen.
The Raiders would get to pair Biletnikoff with Lance Alworth, if they switch real life and didn't trade him to San Diego.
Mike Ditka, legendary Cowboys and Bears player, and Bears coach, would be on the defending champion of the AFL, Houston.
Herb Adderley of Packers fame would be drafted to the original Jets, the New York Titans, who lasted only a year more with this name.
Falcons tackle legend (1966 rookie year, picked #1, got 294 TACKLES) Tommy Nobis would be an Oiler.
That's all I found notable. Imagine the history of football if this was reality. The Broncos would probably create a dynasty from Butkus, Olsen, Krause, and Hayes. Sayers would light it up for KC with Staubach. Imagine Houston's passing game with Taylor and Ditka. And the Bills, with Eller and Warfield, would win more AFL championships than they did. What an idea, right?
