The Data (Per PFF & PFR)
++Total Yards++ Stafford - 3,722 Maye - 3,929 (3,567 passing)
Maye beats out in total yards, but the amount of rushing attempts makes up for more than the difference in passing attempts, equalling the yards per attempt out to 8 per player. Even when you add in rushing totals, Maye can’t beat out Staff on a per attempt basis. Anyone who knows a lick about the game knows Passing weighs significantly more than rushing.
Point Stafford
++Total TDs++ Stafford - 37 Maye - 27 (23p, 4r)
This is the biggest stat differential. Even with Maye’s rushing he can’t come close to Stafford. Only argument against Stafford is he throws goal line fades to Adams, but why is he being punished for being elite at the most difficult throw in the sport?
Point Stafford
++Turnovers++ (teamrankings) Stafford - 5 INT & 3 FL (8) Maye - 7 INT & 2 FL (9)
Pretty black & white.
Point Stafford
++Completion %++ Stafford - 66.4% Maye - 70.9%
Maye takes the cake on this one. You could use the argument Stafford is effected more by drops, but even with ADJ% Maye wins.
Point Maye
++Advanced Passing++ Big Time Throws - Stafford 36, Maye 23 Passer Rating - Stafford 112.2, Maye 109.1 Adjusted Net Yards per Attempt - Stafford 8.42, Maye 7.78 Passing Success Rate - Stafford 55.4%, Maye 52.2% Turnover Worthy Plays - Stafford 13, Maye 14
Point Stafford
The common argument of Maye being a better deep passer is also easily debunked. On throws 20+ yards downfield, Stafford handles him easily. Leads in big time throws, more TDs, & in passer rating. Maye has a higher completion percentage, but here is where the drops come into play. Their adjusted comp% is within .3% (Stafford having the slight edge)
Now I’m sure people will try and claim I “cherry picked” these data points. Mainly Maye fans or Pats fans. The reality is I reached out to a few former peers who work in Data Analysis for the Bengals, Raiders, 49ers, and the Bucs. They said these are the biggest marks their teams look at when viewing the QB position.
Maye is having an exceptional year, arguably a top 5 sophomore year of all time. Unfortunately for him this season, he’s up against a HOFer having a career year.
