53:T'Vondre Sweat DL | Texas
At 53 a couple Trade downs (Exact details are in the link above-I didn't make any of them) we grabbed a massive defensive tackle in Sweat. One of if not the BEST run stuffing defensive tackle in the draft. Big enough to play Nose in a 3-4 but agile and nimble enough to line up in a 4-3. Shows some promise as a pass rusher as well. May never fill up the stat sheet with sacks, pressers, or even TFL's but he will impact the game. You cant block him 1 on 1 in the rungame as he just eats up blocks and can slow down 2 gaps at the SAME time. Sweat with Alim inside would be one of the best run stuffing duos in the league, while both have sneaky pass rushing abilities. He may never have the conditioning to be a every down guy but with guys like Brodrick Martin and hopefully a healthy Levi that gives them another run stuffer or pass rusher to replace him with.
61:Calen Bullock S | USC
One of my favorite prospects in this draft in Callen Bullock just felt like the right pick here at 61. Arguably the best deep safety in the draft (Counting Dejean as a corner). You might think that the lions don't need safety from Brian branch, kerby, ifeatu,CjGJ (If resigned). But theirs a good chance that with the loss of tracy walker and potentially cj gardner johnson that we are looking for someone to add the safety unit. Outside of Kerby Joesph we lack another true deep safety. This allows for some more positional and personnel options as this allows kerby to move closer to the ball and gives some more creativity with Ifeatu. He isnt the most athletic guy in the world but his pass instincts easily makes up for them. Also has history at usc playing in the slot so the positional versatility is their. Needs to work on his tackling and run instincts but a full NFL offseason and knowing he doesn't need to be thrown into the fire right away will allow him to round out his game. Also can offer some special team snaps as a gunner. Might not be the best at it but hes definitely serviceable at the spot.
66:Javon Bullard S | Georgia
Big fan of bullards game coming out of gerogia. Projects to be a slot corner like brian branch. But has the versatility to play safety but not anyone you want to rely on consistently deep down the field. His biggest knock is his size and athleticism. Standing at 5'10 with a small frame in terms of both length and weight might struggle to tackle bigger stronger players, while not being able to break up some NFL throws. Also his top speed is in question. But man is his football iq high. That may be his saving grace. He reminds me a lot of a Brian Branch minus some of the tackling. Tackling is a big of a question, not because he isn't willing, but due to his lack of technique. But an NFL offseason should be able to fix that up nicely. The biggest question would be if we bring back gardner johnson. This allows the Lions flexibility to where they may feel no need to pay the price of someone of his caliber. I feel like he fits nicely as our second slot next to branch which is needed in this spread pass heavy NFL.
73:Jonah Elliss EDGE | Utah
Jonah is 2 inches and 40lbs away from being a first round pick. Maybe one of the most polished edge rusher only behind latu. Ellis's biggest knock is his size. At 6'1 240 hes going to struggle against big athletic tackles. He may never project to be an evendown guy due to his size but damn does he make an impact when hes on the field. I would love to see him somehow bulk up to 250-255 while maintaining his athletsism. Even with his small stature he always finds a way to put pressure on the qb. May never have a double digit sack season but he is always getting pressure on the qb, ethier forcing him into other teamates or a bad throw. I would like to see more of an impact in the run game. Especially knowing with the effort he plays with. He will play best in the nfl in a standup or 2 point stance. But a combination of pascal, ellis, houston oppisite of hutch will allow the lions to hopefully get the sacks that they just cant get.
83:Christian Haynes IOL | UConn
The biggest question for the lions entering this offseason is what is going on in the interior of the o-line. Both starting guards entering free agency and both not locks to come back just leaves massive questions in the interior. Christian Hayes out of UConn might just be the answer the lions are looking for. One of the best performers at the senior bowl, at 6'2 320 he isn't the biggest guy in the world. But he is surprisingly light on his feet. He plays extremely hard in the run game and is great at pulling block, pins, and all that fun stuff. Those are some things that lions love to see. Especially in the interior. Questions about his pass protection due to his small arm length but that hasnt limited him against any competition hes faced. Thier are some questions about competition knowing he played at UConn but the senior bowl put all of that to rest. Right guard of the future right here.
85:Jeremiah Trotter Jr.LB | Clemson
Now in hindsight this is a bit of a questionable pick but I think if I had the choice I would do it again...We dont need a boundary corner or anything.... Trotter gives us the one thing our current LB core lacks. Pure athletsism. Projecting to be one of our best athletes at the position he projects to stay in the box even given his small stature at 6'0 230. He offers a unique skillset as not only is he good in coverage but hes a pretty decent pass rusher as well from the position. Having racked up 12 sacks in his collegiate career. He needs to work on his pad level and his technique while he tackles but hopefully a full NFL offseason fixes both of those up. Eventual LB starter but he isnt forced into the fire thanks to the trio of anzelone, cambpell, and barnes. But with anzelone future being in question due to his age it is never to early to grab his replacement. Thanks to his impressive, iq, blitzing ability, zone coverage I doubt it would take to long before he finds a way onto the field outside of special teams.
90:Braelon Allen RB | Wisconsin
This is the embodiment of an luxury pick, but I dont think it could have been a better pick (Screw boundary corner). A BIG bruising back out of Wisconsin. Standing at 6'2 240. A former Highschool linebacker who transitioned to running back due to injuries his freshman year and he became a stud. Quickly becoming one of the best big 10 running backs at 17 years old (20 entering the draft). He may not have the quickness or the agility of some of these smaller backs but he makes it up with his long speed and sheer power. He reminds me alot of Leanord Fournette coming out of college. I expect him to be one of the best blockers from the running back spot knowing hes built like a tightend. May also see some time at fullback as well. But how would he fit on this Detroit roster that already has monty and gibbs. Well we found out that unfortunately running backs do get hurt. We weren't quite as effective with only 1 of gibbs or monty available. So having Allen as a third option would be great. Also allows us to keep monty fresher towards the end of games and the season. Should also provide wonderful special team value knowing his history of defense and his size.
92:Malachi Corley WR | Western Kentucky
Lets start right away with his freakish body. He is 5'10 almost 5'11 but yet he is a freaking 215LBS. And he isnt some slow lumbering giant. He runs an explosive 4.4-4.5 40. He is built like a running back but yet he moves like a slot wr. He may struggle to find playing time right away due to him being a slot wr, knowing he will be behind amon ra and fighting with kalif raymond. But he has so much potential as a nice gadget player in a ben johnson offense that could be lethal. His one nick is he doesn't exactly have the best hands in the world. Especially when the ball is away from his body. But with a qb like Goff that shouldn't be much of a problem. Some questions about his competition but its nothing im worried about. Would like to see some better route running as well but he has time.
95:Josh Newton CB | TCU
My lazy ass finally got around to getting us a boundary corner. He may not have the flashiest name but he fills a need. He may never be a number 1 guy but I think he will be a more then serviceable CB 2/3. Which would be a great improvement than the weird vildor/jacob rotation that we endured last season. Would also take some stress off of sutton if he doesn't have to guard the number 1 guy evrey year. He has decent size at 6' 190. His one biggest concern is his top speed and effort in the run game. But those didn't detour me especially at pick 95.
100:Christian Mahogany IOL | Boston College
A 3 year starter at Boston college, Mahogany has shown that he has what it takes to make it at the next level. Being able to play left or right guard, he would fix what is a potential picture perfect interior that had so many questions to start the season. He is a littler smaller in stature at 6'2 320. But he has strong hands, incredibly smart, and when of the better run blockers in the class. He has some questions in the pass game at the next level but with him in-between decker and ragnow hes going to have help and assistance when he needs it.
109:Cade Stover TE | Ohio State
Big fan of his game coming out of Ohio State. Standing at 6'4 250 the former linebacker commit moved to tight end after a failed conversion to defensive end. Still a little raw at the position especially with his run blocking but that is to be expected knowing how new he is to the position much less the offensive side of the ball. He is a decent athlete where he is great in Straightline situations (4.5 40) but he isnt the best at maintaining his speed out of his breaks and such. Has extremely safe and reliable hands. May not be the best route runner but he has enough to get it done. 1 or 2 more years at the position and the Lions could have 2 top 15 tight ends to play with.
153:Tommy Eichenberg LB | Ohio State
At 6'2 240 Eichenberg plays the exact way Lions like to look for from their linebackers. That hard nosed run defender that just knows where the ball is going. He isnt the most athletic guy in the world as he may never be a sideline to sideline defender but he is still pretty good in zone coverage. I would like to see some more fluidity in his hips and for him to tackle with a little bit more power. He isnt good in man coverage and is definitely lacking as a blitzer. But to be the teams 6th lb I dont think we should be worried about some of his limitations.
156:MarShawn Lloyd RB | USC
Well whats better than having 3 good running backs when you can have 4!!! A very complete back with both rushing and receiving capabilities. Good blend of size and speed. Could improve after the catch. One of the best pass blockers in the class. Not much more to say about him.
158:Ben Sinnott TE | Kansas State
Well Brock wrights time might unfortunately come to an end. Here comes in the 6'4 250 tight end from Kansas state. One of the best run blocking tight ends in the class in terms of results and effort. That will help him see the field early on. Especially in this ben johnson offense. Very good at high pointing the ball, violent after the catch, often able to fight down a guy or 2 before he goes down. Extremely good catch radius as he can catch low and behind. A extremely good route runner that can even fool some DB's. Surprising straight line speed. Plays better against zone defenses as he struggles to get separation at times against man. Will never take the top off of a defense. Reminds me a lot of tucker kraft as a prospect.
160:Gabe Hall DL | Baylor
Gabe Hall is a very intriguing prospect for me. Started/played significantly in 4 of the 5 years at baylor. So he has plenty of experience. Stands at 6'5 290. Can align up anywhere from the dt spot. Would definitely like to see him join the 300lb club before the start of his rookie season. Has an elite wingspan, above avg 40, and expected vertical, he has such an interesting body type. Has great effort. Would like for him to add some more pass-rush moves. Struggles at times in the run game. Also works himself out of the run game at times. Will be interesting if he can return to his last year form.
163:Zion Tupuola-Fetui EDGE | Washington
He just feels like the edge that arron glen has been looking for. Decent size and athleticism. Massive strong hands. He is a nice blend of an off ball and on ball edge. Something that glenn has been looking for from julian orkorwa and james houston. Will never be a good edge rusher but he is a solid depth piece while being the edge/linebacker hybrid that glenn has been looking for.
171:Joe Milton QB | Tennessee
You could tell me that there is not a single qb in this class with more potential than Milton and I don't think I could argue against you. An extremely raw prospect but he has all the physical tools. Standing at 6'5 235 he has the build to make it into the NFL. He has the strongest arm in the class being able to throw 70 yards like its nothing. I expect him to run a 4.5-4.6 40 time. He has the giant hands and quick release time that NFL scouts like to see. He can improvise inside and outside of the pocket. He has the velocity to get balls into tight windows. He just has one problem. He cant put any air on balls to save his life. Its all or nothing and that has lead him to have some accuracy concerns. He is also an older prospect so that might worry some. But as the third qb option behind goff and hooker I think he would be great. Fills the 3rd qb role left by a retiring teddy bridgewater.
189:Will Reichard K | Alabama
Automatic from anything within 50 yards. Didnt miss an extra point in his senior season. Questions about his range but his reliability makes up for that.
205:Dwight McGlothern CB | Arkansas
A quality outside press man corner out of Arkansas. Mediocre athlete at 6'1. Good instincts and ball skills. Gambles and loses sometimes at the catch point. Wont see the field early due to the fact he struggles on deep routes.
207:Kamal Hadden CB | Tennessee
A zone boundary corner out of Tennessee. At 6'1 he is a very good athlete. Very good in coverage but lacks tackling and any run defense. But has shown physicality as a hitter. Very good ball skills and his fluid hips allow him to stay right on a receiver. Needs to work on his tackling technique and he gets a little handsy down the field. A NFL offseason could really shape him up into a nice depth piece. Might see some time at gunner due to his speed and power as a hitter.
212:Drake Nugent IOL | Michigan
A guard/center out of Michigan Drake is a little small at 6'2 300 but he is one of the more agile guys in the interior while being extremely good on pull blocks, blocks in the second level, etc. Definitely will be a better run blocker than a pass protector. Against quicker guys he will struggle in pass protection as he doesn't have the speed or arm length to mirror quicker players. His versatility makes him worthwhile as a nice depth piece.
247:Khristian Boyd DL | Northern Iowa
The final pick in this god-forsaken hell hole of analysis. A very versatile player as he can play anywhere along the line. Not exactly the most athletic but he makes up for it with effort and strength. Great run blocker. May not stick on the 53 but would be a great practice squad guy.
