With the NFL offseason comes predictions and bold takes. That specifically happens with trades that could happen before the season or the deadline. With that in mind Deebo Samuel is an intriguing trade option, and if he is traded, it will be to the Detroit Lions.

All of the trade talk coming out of San Francisco has been Brandon Aiyuk. In reality, it could very well be Samuel who the 49ers end up trading. Brock Purdy could be extended, and with Aiyuk being a bit younger at 26, and the clear top option for Purdy, it would be ideal to give Aiyuk his contract extension. With Samuel at 28 he is older than Aiyuk but still a valuable player that would allow the 49ers to get plenty of value in trade return, especially with his versatility out of the backfield. It just happens that the 49ers have many positions of need and after drafting Ricky Pearsall who is also a gadget receiver, it could allow San Francisco more flexibility to acquire draft capital and move on from Samuel.

With that decision, it would also save the 49ers $22 million in cap space. With being $26 million below the cap right now for 2025, it would be an overall ideal move for San Francisco to start thinking ahead as far as creating space to extend or re-sign players and overall get younger.

The perfect trade team would be the Detroit Lions. The Lions currently have $71 million in cap space, and an underrated need at wide receiver. The Lions should be making a push to go all in and solidify their offense after making the NFC Championship Game in 2023 and winning the NFC North. Amon-Ra St. Brown has turned into being a top-tier receiver, but he’s really the only true threat on the offense outside of running back Jahmyr Gibbs and tight end Sam LaPorta. As far as receivers go though, it’s St. Brown in a room with Jameson Williams who still needs to develop and Kalif Raymond.

A trade for Samuel would allow the Lions to provide Jared Goff with the optimal supporting cast to truly take the offense to the next level. On top of that, Samuel’s dynamic receiving ability and rushing ability would allow Ben Johnson to truly open the playbook up and have the offense reach a new level of creativity.

It would put a ceiling on the 49ers offense for a bit, but in the long-run to prepare for the future and save cap, trading Samuel is the move they need to make. In the process for Detroit, trading for Samuel is the move they need to make to ensure they can go all the way to a Super Bowl this season, creating an ideal situation for both teams.
