PG's contract is not aging well (to say the least), so the Sixers get off of that contract in this trade by turning him into Jerami Grant (slight upgrade, younger, & better contract) as well as an expiring Robert Williams to serve as Embiid insurance & could theoretically play alongside him in double big lineups as well. Depending on how the season goes, they could bring Williams back or re-purpose that extra salary space. They also convert the #3 pick (which is a bit of a fit conundrum) into Portland's #11 which carries a lower cap hit AND could still snag them a nice player to fit in the coming Maxey x Mccain era after the Embiid window.
In terms of who that could be: Sorber/Queen/(Maluach even) could be there as potentially long term Embiid successors OR they could find a big playmaker like Jakucionis/Demin to help set-up their scoring guards and run their 2nd unit, maybe they even take one of those high-upside wings like an C.Bryant/Essengue/Penda to setup the roster for success down the line.
Meanwhile for Portland they offload two players not really part of the long-term plans, in exchange for moving up from #11 to #3. They take on that PG13 albatross, but the deal is the same length as grant and expires in time for Avdija and Clingan extensions. George gives them a high-upside rejuvenation project to mentor this budding young core. And maybe that #3 pick can be the star that gives this young team the extra oomph they need to make noise in the coming years.
In this version, to make the deal a bit more fair for the Blazers, the Sixers also do a pick swap down the line in '28 or '30 and swap Council for Rupert who's a little less productive and expires sooner.
