Awesome prospect will come in and provide defense and athleticism right away. Definitely a wing decent shooter not the greatest playmaker. Shades of Keldon Johnson. Team played better without him

High End: Jaden McDaniels Low End: Garrett Temple Median outcome: Derrick Jones Jr. Pros: Size, motor, defense Cons: Shooting, shot creation Verdict: Big bulky wing who is an aggressive slasher/defender, but has issues with shot creating and 3pt shooting. Thiero has taken a scoring jump after transferring out of Kentucky, but the questions remain the same with him. He's been a willing shooter and has taken long 2s, so it is possible that his shot will expand to NBA range and even if not, he's a really good tool to have for a contender's arsenal as a defensive wing stopper.

ADOU THIERO

Position/Archetype: Athletic Disruptor Defensive Wing

College: Arkansas

Pros:

  • Athleticism + Aggressiveness: Very quick reactions and speed, Jumps effortlessly, gets above the rim very easily, moves in transition really well, hangs in the air for a long time. A pretty classic high athleticism wing with long limbs type of player.

  • Steals: Can poke the ball from you and get into the passing lanes, good anticipation of passes, jumps way too often but does get a load of steals, the high volume allows him to be very effective in transition utilising his athletics. A pretty strong perimeter defensive talent.

  • Drives: Really efficient driver at the rim, pretty comfortable handling it as well, he uses his body well, first step is pretty good and finds space to drive into. Very strong and explosive when he gets there to be a very efficient rim scorer and I think this will be usable in the league

  • Off ball movement: Cuts pretty well and finds space pretty easily, again very athletic and very hard to stay with, gonna be very useful in the type of role he will likely take in the NBA, his movement on the perimeter will likely not matter as much, probably won't get tested too much out there anyway.

Cons:

  • Three point shooting: This is what makes it really hard to believe too much in him, as someone who has a great defensive skillset he is not able to knock down the 3 from volume or very efficiently, and thats been as theme throughout his college career. the names I've compared him to are and probably will be better shooters than him.

  • IQ: Rushes stuff a lot and from a guy who's been in college for three years yet still somewhat young tells me he probably won't get to a much higher level of understanding. His defensive movement gets him caught sometimes and again he tries to jump lanes too much and is maybe too aggressive. This may play him off the court similar to how Kuminga has been for the warriors

  • Lack of creation: Outside of just doing his drives he doesn't have an interesting handle and really only has his first step to create with, also cant create a perimeter shot for himself, can do some connecting passes so thats interesting.

  • Reliant on Athleticism: Doesn't really show anything other than use of his body and athleticism to get what he wants which really holds him back in my mind, not a fan of pure athletic monsters if they don't have a decent skillset to go with it and this is a case where he seems to just have the insane athleticism. I probably won't think of him being more than an end of bench guy but if he can be a consistent shooter he can get his way on the court as a starter even. but can very likely be a long term G league guy.

NBA Pro Comp: Jonathon Kuminga, Derrick Jones Jr, Jae Crowder

Projection: High Motor, high energy end of bench guy for a competitive team

Comp: OG Anunoby/Patrick Williams/Caleb Martin

  • great at using his body on the drive; invites contact

  • great understanding of defensive schemes; hardly late to switches/rotations

  • physical and composed defender with a really high defensive floor; versatile and can guard 1-5

  • could work on screen navigation but isn’t terrible as it stands

  • poor finishing as he’s typically finishing over taller defenders (sub 50% on layups)

  • solid shooter but nothing great; good form but bad efficiency from three this year at just over 25%

  • sub 70% ft shooter

  • solid connecting playmaker but better without the ball

  • good positional rebounder
