Ajay Mitchell - UC Santa Barbara / Belgium (PG - HT: 6’5” - WING: - WT: 200 - A: 22y)

- Big point guard with a smooth game
- Really solid getting downhill and finishing near the rim or drawing fouls, strong body
- Very good FT shooter
- Plays solid D and gets deflections and some help-side blocks, was impressed with some of his chaser D and getting around screens
- Good midrange and decent floater
- Not a great 3pt shooter, but this year is shooting 40% on low volume - last 2 years averaged 30%
- Not the best playmaker but still a solid PG, more-so a scorer who can move the ball well but not going to create tons of high level looks/assists
- Can play off ball all right due to his cutting and so far respectable jumper
- Poor rebounder especially with his size, just doesn’t crash or hustle for any boards
- Shades of Andrew Nembhard

STRENGTHS:

  • A good distributor ho uses his eyes well to manipulate defenses

  • A very solid and calculated driver who knows how to create driving lanes and utilize good body control and footwork to get off those shots

  • Improved his three-point shot to 40% on three attempts per night; some of it was him as a standstill shooter, and also displayed some off the dribble shooting ability

  • Has a good ability of changing speeds, wiggling his way through closed driving windows and displays good touch on his movement shots

WEAKNESSES:

  • Shooting has to prove it is real; only shot 29% from three in his first two seasons before his big jump this season

  • His changing of speeds will be great for driving, but I am projecting will not be able to do those same dribbling maneuvers to operate as a mid-range scorer

  • Seemed like an unwilling shooter when he was attempting those jumpers; he will have to become a more willing shooter in order to not be a detriment to the offense, especially if all he will do is clog up the paint

Player Comparison: Shades of Tre Mann and Andrew Nembhard

Pro Comparison: Kind of Jalen Brunson

++Strengths:++

  1. Lead guard who plays with confidence and flair

  2. Smooth in the open floor, can get downhill and maintain control to go into a spin move and finish on the break

  3. Strong free throw shooter (Above 80%)

  4. Good distributor who's careful with the ball (2:1 assist to turnover ratio)

  5. Willing passer with good court vision

  6. Has active hands and takes pride on the defensive side of the ball

++Weaknesses:++

  1. 3 point success has been all over the place throughout his college career (27% last year but 47% this year)

  2. Might not have the strength and control to create separation at the next level

  3. Has decent length, but does he have the motor and focus to become a plus defender?

  4. His effectiveness off ball is also a question

I really like what Mitchell showed his season. He was effective off the catch, and dominated his conference opponents with an efficient in-between game. He knows how to make complex reads against his own closeouts and seeing what advantages are everywhere else on the court. He has good size for a guard, and more attention on defense can resolve a lot of the issues we saw here. As an older junior, I just don't know how may of the necessary improvements he will have in the tank.
