Big Board Rankings

Strengths

  • One of the best shooters in the draft -- 42% from 3 on 5.5 attempts per game last season. Elite shot preparation and mechanics. Not just a catch-and-shoot guy either. Great footwork creating space with step-backs. Excellent balance on his pull-up. Made 44 pull-ups in just 26 games last season. Comfortable with side steps or mid-range pull ups when run off the line. Can run off of screens a little bit. Incredibly efficient inside the arc at 63.1% from 2. True shooting percentage over 66%, rare for a perimeter player.

Areas to Improve

  • Already 24 years old. How much of his production and efficiency is a product of him being 3 to 5 years older than most of his competition?

Pick 19 New York Knicks:

Duarte has a clear path to master in the NBA. He can fill the Danny Green or Dillon Brooks mold perfectly as a good-sized off-ball guard with tons of shooting and positional defense. He will be one of the older rookies next year so he should be able step in early.

Player Comp:Tyler Herro One of if not the best shooter in the class, is a good playmaker and ball handler for his role, is a good defender on and off the ball, he is already 24 so he has a pretty low ceiling, and is not big enough to be put in an 3-D role in the NBA

Duarte is this year's Desmond Bane only he is even better of a shooter. He is easily a top 3 shooter in the class and he can knock them down from every spot on the court. He also can put it on the floor and finish in transition making him even more of a weapon. His defense is at worst, solid and playable but likely to be a little bit better than that until he is at a significant size disadvantage. All of this sounds great but his ceiling is very clearly already where he is at which could hurt him a bit in where he falls. He is a perfect fit for any team built to win now; who doesn't need a sharpshooting 3&D wing? However, there are obviously not many teams like that drafting early. Most the teams with picks in the first two thirds of the first round are looking for long term potential over win now team fit. If he doesn't go to the Warriors at 14, I would expect him to fall to the mid to late 20s to one of the many contenders looking to boost their benches (Denver, Philly, either LA).
