Pre-Draft Team Mississippi State Bulldogs

Offense

  • Nice finishing moves. Really good looking floater with feathery touch.

  • Really nice shiftiness and burst while attacking.

  • Active and willing cutter. Hard to contain.

  • Very good free throw shooter.

  • Confident and convincing pull up mid-range jumper.

  • Really high percentage 3pt shooter coming into this year, but has struggled to convert just 28% right now. Still plenty of reason to believe he will be a positive perimeter shooter.

  • Limits turnovers and has improved his playmaking abilities, currently a 2.15 AST/TO ratio.

Defense

  • Good PNR defender.

  • Athleticism to competently defend lead guards.

  • Probably won't ever create many turnovers.

Swing Factors

  • Playmaking Ability - He has taken strides in becoming a more competent and effective passer, but will this progression continue at the next level? His scoring abilities coupled with being able to feed talented teammates will make him all the more intriguing.

  • Perimeter Shooting - Molinar's pull up mid range and finishing around the rim are fantastic. His perimeter shooting should be good as well. If he consistently knocks down from outside we could be looking at a potent three-level scorer.

  • Defensive Translation - If he can't exude the ability to not hurt his team as an on ball defender he will have a hard time staying on the floor.

Role

  • A scoring lead guard comfortable attacking all three levels to get buckets.

  • LOW: Molinar's struggles to find the cup the same way at the NBA level, his shooting only grades out as average and defensively he is miscast. He finds himself on the verge of rotations as a journeyman guard who can score a little bit.

  • HIGH: The ability to attack transitions seamlessly with NBA spacing keeping the defense honest. But when they try to stop the drive his mid range pull up becomes a deadly weapon and he shows great prowess with perimeter shooting in the C&S. Playmaking abilities continue to blossom and he has no problem competently defending lead guards on any given night. Eventually Molinar works his way to a starting role scoring around twenty a game.

Terrific passer. Wants to give his teammates open shots that they can work with. On-ball point guard, willing to find the space he needs to work with and take floaters/layups. Great off ball defense.

Cannot shoot the three at an NBA level. Would be a facilitator over a scorer if drafted.
