Bruiser that knows how to operate and can stretch the floor a bit. Extremely polished, not overly athletic and can play the 4 or 5. Markief Morris. More of an old school guy.

High End: Nets Blake Griffin Low End: Kris Humphries/Drew Gooden Median outcome: Daniel Theis/Jaylin Williams Pros: Touch/feel, defense, motor, shooting Cons: Size, athleticism Verdict: Broome is an incredible college player, but his tweener size leaves more to be desired out of someone who will play the 5 in the NBA. His just-okay athleticism also stops him from being a viable 4-man player, but there is a path to success if his shooting translates into the league. Currently, the shot is a bit funky, but with a decent volume of long 2 makes it is likely that he projects to be a passable shooter in the league. Other weapons like his passing and rim scoring should also help him on the offensive end as a possible short roll passer. The defense is real and his shot blocking is especially indicative of that with productive performances despite the athletic concerns.

Big and strong. Plays physical. Rebounds well. Has surprising quickness for a guy his size. Not a great shooter.

Comp: Precious Achiuwa/Brandon Clarke/Jarace Walker

  • polished inside scorer; has an ambidextrous array of finishing tools w/ good touch and a very good use of his body

  • great at drawing fouls and gaining physical advantages down low

  • plays well off two feet when on the drive; utilizes drop steps/hop steps/pump fakes effectively inside

  • elite screening; will provide great positional screening value if he gets played as a 4

  • good playmaker out of the post

  • not a great jumpshooter; only 31% from college threes on primarily wide open looks

  • solid defensive motor; often wins the physical battle and is a great post defender w/ great composure

  • lacks vertical athleticism, is fairly slow footed, and isn’t much of a defensive playmaker

  • good rebounding instincts

  • being either an undersized 5 or a non-spacing 4 barring significant shooting improvement suggests questionable portability

Broome is a senior who brings a ready-made game as an interior finisher with a passing feel and tone-setting defense. But his shaky jumper hasn’t progressed as much as NBA teams would hope.

Pros:

Effort

Defense

Playmaking

At-rim finishing

Post scoring

Cons:

Shooting

Athleticism

Comparisons: Jaylin Williams

(2/3) TBC

Johni Broome is a 6'10-ish PF/C who has a real chance of taking home NCAA Player of the Year honours.

He is the leading scorer, rebounder, assist-er, and shot-blocker of the best team in college basketball right now.

Broome is a senior, who turns 23 in July. Last year, he also led Auburn in PPG, RPG, and BPG, while being third in assists.

Johni Broome is an absolute bruiser, which I see as him fully understanding his advantages and using them to the highest extent. Not many in the NCAA can stand a chance against his punishing, polished style.

The age is undeniable though, and his playstyle probably won't directly translate with the bigger, stronger opponents of the NBA. I'm not writing him off though, since he has shown adaptation and improvement over his long stint in college.

Even with his shorter stature, Broome is a great shot blocker. He can also rebound over bigger guys, or out-muscle them. His offensive rebounding is a key skill to his powerful presence down low.

I don't think I believe in the three point shot right now, it's inconsistent, but also his shot selection when shooting them is sometimes confusing.

At worst, he'll probably be a G-League crusher.
