JT Toppin High End: Larry Nance Jr. Low End: Juwan Morgan Median outcome: 21/22 Precious Achiuwa Pros: Athleticism, rebounding, interior scoring, defense Cons: Size, shot consistency, handle Verdict: JT Toppin was a fringe first round prospect last season, and he’s followed it up by being one of the most productive P5 players in the country this season in a competitive Texas Tech team that relies on his offensive rebounding for second chance scores. He’s a bouncy athlete with high motor on the boards while also having good instincts on the defensive end with the occasional block or steal to start the break. His soft touch inside the arc allows him to get buckets despite being an undersized big, measuring in at 6'7" without shoes which would be tweener size in the league. His size deficiencies are also further hampered by his 3pt shot which has only flashed in moments and his bad FT%. However, Toppin has shown some intrigue as he does take a lot of long midrange shots which hopefully could translate into the league. His self-creation off the dribble is basically negligible at this point, so Toppin’s outcome is likely to be capped at a starter ceiling at best.

  • Ceiling: Borderline ALL-NBA

  • Floor: Starter

  • Expectation: Starter

  • What to Expect: Could grow into an outstanding player, not expecting he will but the potential is there. No matter what he will be a reliable, high-level player

Toppin is a defensive stalwart who lays it all out on the floor with a strong interior scoring ability. But unless he can translate his soft touch from the paint to a much deeper range, he’ll be a limited scorer that will have to rely on others to make an offensive impact.

Pros:

Rim protection

Defensive playmaking

Heart

Soft touch

At-rim finishing

Cons:

Shooting

Playmaking

Defensive discipline

Comparisons: Jarred Vanderbilt, P.J. Tucker

Pros
  • Rebounding

  • Positioning(Mostly under basket)

  • High motor

  • Athleticism

  • Strong through contact

  • Shot blocking ###Cons

  • 3pt Shooting

  • Playmaking

  • Pick and roll (both sides)

  • Slightly underweight

  • Help defense

Best rebounder in the draft, high motor, handles contact well, good lateral speed, solid interior defense. Biggest flaw is shooting and lack of touch. Not a great scorer outside of paint, needs to develop offensive skills facing the basket and as a roll man for screens.
