Keyonte George: 6'4" 200 lbs 15.3 ppg, 4.2 rpg, 2.8 apg, 1.1 spg, 38% fg%, 34% 3%, 79% ft%

Keyonte George has one of the more intriguing skillsets in this Draft class but failed to play up to the expectations while at Baylor. George played the U23 global games for a depleted Baylor roster and scored 32 and 37 points against Italy and Canada setting himself up to be a top 7 pick but he struggled with shooting consistency as a freshman at Baylor. George sprained his ankle and really struggled to move following that and played at a weight he said was not right for him. All that said, George can score in a plethora of ways with an advanced creation game stemming from and expansive repertoire and an insatiable desire to score. George was one of the winners of pro-days/ the NBA Combine as he shot the lights out and demonstrated a focus on playing point guard which would raise his ceiling giving him plus size at his position and couples scoring knack with some passing flashes he showed as a 2 guard at Baylor. The question is can he run an offense and still score. In that sense, he reminds me of Jamal Murray who is who I compared George to coming out of high school as a taller shot making guard who relies more on shooting than athleticism to score and can play make but is not a natural point guard.

Strengths:

  • Scores as if its second nature.

  • Potential to be a microwave scorer.

  • Picturesque form.

  • Scores from 3 and midrange and can drive but that is behind the other 2 levels.

  • Draws fouls which is what good scorers do.

  • Shows promising signs of playmaking/ good vision.

  • Tight handle but does not use it to go down hill as much as he does to create space for a J.

  • Does have a hesitation move which is big for a player of his ilk.

  • Has size to play 2 if the 1 does not happen as it looks like he's trying to do.

  • Grabs rebounds.

Weaknesses:

  • Negative assists to turnover with 95 turnovers to 91 assists.

  • Is a tough shot taker and sometimes maker but makes it too difficult.

  • Can force.

  • Only an okay rim finisher shooting 52% from rim finishes.

  • For how pure his shot looks, his shooting numbers are very pedestrian.

  • Bumped away from rim so makes shots harder than they need to be.

  • Can pout on the court at times.

  • Late in season, did not make a positive impact on the court.

Swing Skills: Should Keyonte George really hit in the NBA, I believe it will be as a scoring point guard who learns to run an offense as the primary ball handler and keeps his scoring chops. I mention Jamal Murray as someone of whom he should aspire to follow the career path. Now, George has the scoring capacity to follow Murray but Murray does play second fiddle to the best passing big man in the game and George may need to find a similar fortune as I do not see him eclipsing 6 assists per game without serious marked improvement passing the ball. I beleive teams will need to be patient with George to cultivate the passing flashes he demonstrates and if they are, you could be looking at a steal 10-15 in the draft who scores 19 points every year and adds 5 rebounds and 4 assists.

Clearly didn’t care about college, he wanted to make the NBA, so his college film doesn’t matter, you just Hotta draft him and see what happens.

Tier: Long-Term Starter

Player Comparisons: Eric Gordon, Bradley Beal, Markelle Fultz

Keyonte George is a big guard with a good frame. He’s a good athlete with good speed and a ton of explosiveness. This level of athleticism makes him near-unguardable at the college level. He’s NBA-ready and should be a high-end lottery pick. He’s a natural scorer and he’s got a great jump shot. He’s crafty and is great at pump fakes and other moves to get by the defender. He’s got good hips and is a powerful finisher as well as a mid-range maestro.

Bio: Baylor, November 8, 2003 (19), 6’4”, 185 lb, Combo Guard

Stats:

Strengths:

  • Shooting

  • Ball handling

  • Confident

  • Touch on floaters

Weaknesses:

  • Getting to the rim

  • Burst/first step

  • Vertical explosion

  • Shot selection

Rundown:

Keyonte, at first glance, is the perfect microwave scorer for the NBA. His shooting is elite and he can splash from range. The handle looks solid, allowing him to get some separation. George’s shot selection and inability to get the rim is where things get dicey.

Shades of: Eric Gordon

19.6 year-old 6'4 SG. 2-Way Shot Maker. Keyonte's jumper looks great and he is an explosive finisher at the rim. He's got a deep bag of dribble moves and is good at creating his own shot. He is not the quickest guard with the ball in his hands, and his burst and first step aren't very effective in helping him get around defenders. He has been a solid playmaker, but he certainly looks more like a combo guard than a lead guard at this point. Being 6'4, he may be a bit undersized for a modern 2 but Keyonte uses his strength to play bigger than he is. Able to back down guards and playmake from the post, Keyonte could have a very versatile offensive role in the NBA. Though he has defensive lapses and makes some poor decisions like many 19 year-olds, Keyonte's defensive instincts are mostly very good. He projects to be a solid NBA defender with his strength and athleticism.

Strengths:

++Shooting

++Shot Creation

+Inside Scoring

+Playmaking

+Defensive Instincts

Weaknesses:

-Offensive Consistency

-Turnovers

-Shot Selection

-Tunnel Vision

-Finishing Through Contact

Shades Of:

Bradley Beal, Markelle Fultz, Eric Gordon, Desmond Bane

Ceiling: All-Star, Jack of All Trades

Floor: Starter, Microwave Scorer

Team Fit:

The first stage of Keyonte's career would be best suited with a primary ball-handler with decent size next to him in the backcourt. Keyonte can get his own buckets, but I'm unconvinced of his immediate ability to lead an offense. However, his athleticism and offensive versatility make him easy to plug in to just about any system with guard minutes available.

Best fits within range: New Orleans, Indiana, Charlotte, Orlando, Utah

OFFENSE

  • Fluid and smooth shot form, decent range

  • uses his big frame and strength to get into the lane well and drive as opposed to using speed and dribble moves

  • crafty with his handle

  • has scoring blindness, meaning that he misses open passes frequently because he’s looking to score

  • somewhat active off ball, looks to be mostly moving to where he’s supposed to be in the offense. stays still if it doesn’t look like he’s gonna get the ball

  • can shoot off movement well

  • very good tough shot maker, can score through contact and fouls

  • attacks the basket really well, can drive and get a good angle at will. has lots of rim pressure

  • when driving downhill he makes the right reads, he can pass out of a drive when the defense collapses well

  • shows some playmaking flashes with nice vision and creativity with his passes

  • can take and make contestes threes with acciracy

  • doesn’t get to the free throw line a ton, concerts at about a 81% clip

  • can operate out of the P&R as the ball handler well, makes quick decisions and the right ones. willing passer. it’s a small thing but he splits screens really well

  • has frequent bad passes that lead to turnovers, this needs to be cleaned up.

  • can shoot really well off the dribble or off the catch

DEFENSE

  • suffocating ball handlers on ball

  • super quick feet, stays with his man consistently well

  • has a high motor off ball, always lurking and looking for the best attempt to make a play. he’s also very smart off ball, he has advanced off ball instincts. these weren’t there in high school, baylor has been a great choice for him for his college.

  • his hands are super active on ball and he generates many steals. gets 2.5 steals per 100 poss

  • he’s not always locked in, he floats off ball at times and just does the bare minimum on and off ball. this happens near the middle of the game

  • hes a very good screen navigator, can guard the poa very well

  • his strong frame lets him guard lots of positions, he’s a relatively switchable guard. he can guard 1-3 and maybe some fours for stretches

  • he gambles a lot off ball trying to get steals, but he recovers really well

ATHLETICISM

  • Very fluid and functional athlete

  • built and strong frame

  • always under control

  • great lateral quickness, moves his feet really well

  • short stride lengths, could be cause for concern

OUTLOOK

  • George should be playing the 2 for whatever team he gets drafted by. the playmaking’s not there to be a 1 and he’s probably not big enough to be a 3 (oh hi, Jae’Sean Tate)

  • day one he will be a great perimeter defender that’s able to guard in the point of attack.

  • on offense, he’ll be a slashing wing that can make catch and shoot threes. he should also be able to use his difficult shot makjng late in the shot clock. the off the dribble shooting and p&r usage should come with time

Keyonte George is a big fan favorite and one of the flashiest players in the class. He’s a walking bucket and has been blowing it up at Baylor. He’s third in the nation amongst ppg for freshmen and has definitely asserted himself as one of the biggest offensive talents in the draft. In high school, he was seen as probably the best pure scorer in the nation and that has certainly translated. George is a really intelligent shot maker and he finds a way to get his shots within the overall flow of the offense. He finds ways to tear defenses apart and pick away at opposing schemes. Despite shooting it a million times per game at Baylor, he does it quite naturally. Even though the box score might suggest he’s a ball hog, he really isn’t and I see him shooting it that often as a product of the team he’s on. Keyonte is a really sweet shooter and an even better slasher. He’s not super athletic but he knows how to contort his body and use his size to score around the rim. His lack of burst and pop does limit his ability to get to the basket but the iq in his finishing makes him more than capable of getting a look. In an open court, he can get up for the dunk but he doesn’t exactly rise over people when there’s a defense. He’s ambidextrous so he can make some crafty finishes that others can’t. He really has a lockdown on his bag in the interior and can’t produce when he needs to. He has a nice three-point shot but could improve. Keyonte loves to make set moves like stepbacks, half spins, and side steps. The way he dribbles to the rim is a bit of a zig-zag. He shifts around defenders and likes to move all across the court. His handle is a little loose but it's not enough of a problem to be much of an issue. He can find a way to score from all over the court but he does have a few preferred spots. A lot of his shooting comes from mid-range as he’s always looking for the easier basket. Although he likes the trickier moves, he does try his best to be an analytical scorer that stays efficient. One knock on him may be the inconsistency he struggles with when scoring, but I think this might be due to Baylor’s reliance on him and his scoring. I do think he can work off of the ball in a system where he has a lighter workload. He’s a nice spot-up shooter that knows how to move well. He knows how to get teammates involved and is actually an underrated willing passer. He’s great at making flashy bullet passes right to cutters or a big in the dunkers' spot. This offensive versatility makes him more of a combo guard rather than a straight-up shooting guard. Baylor had two other smaller guards in their rotation which might have contributed to his more linear role. If a team needs to run him at point guard they certainly can as he knows how to handle the ball as a lead creator and generate offense. Keyonte has the x-factor as a handler. You can always feel comfortable if he has the ball in his hands late into the game as we’ve seen him dominate in the clutch multiple times through his high school, college, and international career. Keyonte’s defense can be a little spotty as he has the occasional tunnel vision found in most young and inexperienced players when guarding off the ball. His on-ball troubles are a little more worrying as it’s more due to the previously mentioned athletic limitations. He does fight over screens well and does move laterally decently well with players of his position. His lack of burst on offense bleeds into his defensive capability as he can’t keep up with some of the shiftier, faster players. This might stop him from playing point guard at the next level because of that defensive gap. I could see teams targeting him defensively because he’s too flat-footed. The defense is a bit of a nitpick but worth noting. Keyonte had a rough end of the season where he had efficiency issues which clearly impacted him mentally. He displayed some poor body language and had some trouble keeping himself on the floor. If his shots aren’t hitting I’d like to see him diversify his game so that he justifies his place on the court. When drafting him, you’re taking him for his offensive prowess and his upside as a creator, but I want to see him be a little bit more than that. Keyonte’s shown that he’s an uber-talented scorer which is easy to see translate to the next level, but I want to see him be a real offensive engine for a team rather than an individual producer.

OFFENSE Is a good tough shot maker that seems also a good catch and shoot 3pt shooter Shot selection is questionable takes highly contested pull ups His passing in transition is good can find teammates when open Needs to learn how to use his scoring gravity to set up teammates in half court His passing is more instinctive and in the first read he sees someone open and passes to him doesn’t seem premeditated Playmaking will be super important for him because he would need to be a super elite scorer to thrive without it as a star guard in NBA especially because he is a good not great athlete Without playmaking I see him more as a Jordan Clarkson , with a decent level of it his dealing becomes Bradley Beal Jumper is a weapon from all iver the court Great confidence Has a very pure shot can get it off in wildest variety of ways Should be more decisive in pulling up from mid range Not comfortable there yet Makes good decisions out of P&R not always Sometimes rushed good finisher through contact Absorbs contact well great hang time , Good at finding angles Embraces phisciality , Can go through a shot blocker chest to finish hard at the rim But can also finish with finesse Not a wrecking ball tho SHOWED HIGH LEVEL FLASHES AS A SCORER FROM ALL OVER THE FLOOR, BUT HAS NOT BEEN EFFICIENT HE HAS BEEN REALLY IMPRESSIVE AS A PLAYMAKER GOOD IN P&R , GOOD READ ACCURACY AND PACE ALSO QUICK READS IN TRANSITION, GOOD TOUCH AND DUMPOFFS NEEDS TO IMPROVE AT CREATING SEPARATION, HE IS TAKING LOTS OF TOUGH SHOTS (MAKING SOME OF THEM) a bit turnover prone, can improve on that and ball security VERY HIGH USAGE, BAD SHOT SELECTION HAS passing IQ and ball-screen vision that suggest he'll be capable of adding legitimate playmaking value at the next level.

DEFENSE

Physical defender also Can guard 1-2 has the phisical tools to defend 3s but don’t think it’s his best starting position Can do it sporadically Inconsistent off ball with his focus MAKING CONSISTENT IMPACT IN BAYLOR "NO MIDDLE" DEFENSE HE IS LATERALLY QUICK AND STRONG ENOUGH TO BEAT PLAYERS TO THE SPOT MULTIPLE TIMES PRETTY SOLID AT SCREEN NAVIGATION QUITE GOOD OFF BALL, GOOD ROTATIONS AND CHARGES has had some excellent sequences

His shooting has slightly declined in college but he’s improved as a playmaker and defender, making him much more well-rounded and ideal. He’ll be a threat to score 20-30 in the NBA on any given night as when he’s on, he’s amazing. His defense is inconsistent and needs to be improved.
