Upsides

• One of the best rim protectors in this draft. He is a smart defender and is good at using his length+athleticism to block+contest shot

• Good rebounder, he had an edge over most players because of his length+athleticism. I expect him to be one of the league leaders in rebounds per game one day, probably sooner rather than later

• The most effective PnR roll man in this draft. His athleticism is elite, giving him an advantage over just about everyone. He also is really hood at catching lobs and throwing down dunks out of the PnR

• Excellent dunker, he throws down electric dunks whenever he gets the chance

• Plays really well in the dunker spot

• Good screener, he has a big body and he is really good at using it

Downsides

• His value outside of the paint on offense is limited to being a screen setter, he won’t ever be good outside of that barring incredibly unprecedented development

• He is young, and that shows on the court

Conclusion

Best team fits: Memphis, Washington, OKC

Worst team fits: Detroit

Shades of: Clint Capela, prime DeAndre Jordan, less athletic Jalen Duren

(as of 2/14/2024)

there's a lot to like about yves!

  • he's 7-foot with a 7'6 wingspan,

  • on the younger side (19 currently, 20 on draft night),

  • active on boards offensively,

  • a defensive presence in the paint (averaging 1.7 bpg),

  • agile compared to many other centers,

  • an amazing P&R player and a lob threat (with a good pg he could be one of the best p&r players imo),

  • a play-through-contact player,

  • decent finisher,

  • and averaging a good fg% (63.4).

-- / --

there’s also a lot to dislike about yves though, mostly stuff to do with his offense.

  • he's shooting 58% from the ft line; doesn't have a jumper. i don't think i ever saw him attempt a shot that wasn't 1) a layup or 2) a dunk... not even floaters.

  • only averaging 5.7 rpg and 2.9 defensive rebounds. this doesn't worry me too much though, it's obvious he can still rebound! just something to keep in mind.

  • not as aggressive as you'd like. he rarely had any self-creation... no post-moves, no big bodying, no cutting or flashing to get open, nothing. if it wasn't him asking for a lob, he wasn't asking for the ball.

  • ^ the few times i did see him attempt to make a move around the rim, he would seem to be a little out of control. he wouldn't go up very strongly (which is why i called him a decent finisher and not a good one before), and he would smoke a layup or miss a floater. sometimes he would also catch a lob and have to come back down with it instead of slamming it down. but this didn't happen very often so i don't view that as a problem personally.

  • not someone you should expect to guard the perimeter, though sometimes i would see him come up to play help defense or trap someone (don't expect that to translate).

  • won't be someone who'll be able to pass the ball out or make a play by himself. didn't see any videos of him passing the ball, and i didn't see any flashes that he could pass the ball. he's averaging less than an assist a game, guess that's just not his role at baylor.

  • i think he should gain some weight. he's listed at 235, but he looks slimmer than that. while i don't think it'll be an issue if he doesn't end up putting on some more weight, it would help him become a better center and a better player overall.

-- / --

yves feels like a very limited player, but still, someone worth taking. he'll be a project but could pay off as a good role player off the bench. drafting him now, you have to understand he won't do much for you but play defense in the paint, rebound, catch lobs, and run the P&R. i don't have much hope he'll develop a shot (maybe a floater or an inconsistent mid-range), nor that he'll end up being able to make plays for his team. but i do think he'll develop some post moves (considering his quicker footwork and frame), average more rebounds, and start getting his own buckets without having to be assisted all the time. he just NEEDS to start playing more aggressively, something i don't doubt he can do.

Prospect rating: mid d.

Yves Missi Scouting Report (as of January 7, 2024)

Overview:

Yves Missi is a 7'0", 230-pound freshman center from Baylor University who has emerged as a potential first-round pick in the 2024 NBA Draft. He boasts a well-rounded skillset for a young center, showcasing potential to develop into a valuable contributor in the NBA.

Strengths:

Efficient scorer around the rim: Missi displays a high level of efficiency around the rim, converting at a good rate on layups and dunks. His size, athleticism, and good hands allow him to finish plays effectively in close quarters. Solid rebounder: Missi demonstrates good rebounding instincts and positioning, allowing him to compete for rebounds on both ends of the court. He has the potential to develop into a strong rebounder at the NBA level. Developing offensive skills: While primarily focused around the rim, Missi possesses some developing offensive skills. He can knock down mid-range shots with decent form and shows flashes of passing ability. Mobile for his size: While not the most explosive athlete, Missi possesses good footwork and mobility for his size. This allows him to switch on defense and contribute in today's fast-paced NBA game. Weaknesses:

Lacks a consistent outside shot: Missi currently lacks a reliable three-point shot, which could limit his offensive versatility at the NBA level. Developing a consistent three-point threat would significantly enhance his value. Needs to add strength: Despite his size, Missi needs to add strength and physicality to compete consistently against stronger NBA centers. This will improve his ability to rebound against bigger opponents and defend in the post. Raw offensively: While showing flashes of offensive skill, Missi is still relatively raw offensively and needs to refine his post moves, footwork, and overall offensive repertoire. Overall:

Yves Missi is a promising young center with a strong foundation of skills and potential for growth. His efficient scoring around the rim, rebounding ability, and mobility are valuable assets.

However, his lack of a consistent outside shot, need for added strength, and overall offensive rawness present areas for development. If he can address these weaknesses and continue to refine his skillset, Missi has the potential to become a solid role player in the NBA.

Additional Notes:

Missi was a four-star recruit coming out of high school and has made a significant impact in his freshman year at Baylor. Some scouts compare him to a young Clint Capela due to his size, athleticism, and rebounding prowess, while others see him as a more mobile and offensively-focused player in the mold of Nikola Jokic. His size, rebounding, and potential for development make him a good fit for teams seeking a young center who can contribute immediately as a rim protector and rebounder, while developing his offensive skills for the future. Overall, Yves Missi is a player to watch closely in the lead-up to the 2024 NBA Draft. He has the talent and potential to make a significant impact on the league for years to come, but his development will hinge on addressing his weaknesses and refining his overall game.

Raw project. Strong with good athleticism and an elite shot blocker. Can't really shoot or make free throws. Seems like all his points come dump offs or offensive rebounds. Think he should go back one more year. Nick Richards with more upside.

Yves Missi is a very well rounded center. He can play good paint defense and be a solid offensive center, more so in the pick and roll, or in the dunker's spot.

Missi offensively won't really create his own shot. He never really had to at Baylor, and now against better players, I don't see that happening for the first couple years of his career. I do think he will provide some value as a screener and lob threat.

Defensively I believe he will be a good to great defender for his career. He is an athletic 6'11" and is very strong. He will be someone, his rookie year, off the bench that coaches will feel 100% comfortable putting him in and playing good defense against some high level centers. As he develops, I think he can turn into one of the premier shot blockers/rim protectors.

Ceiling: Prime Clint Capela Floor: Robert Williams stats minus the injuries hopefully Comparison: DeAndre Jordan

Favorite Fits:

  1. New Orleans Pelicans

  2. Phoenix Suns

  3. Washington Wizards

Yvis Missi is an athletic, shifty, and mobile center. He's quick and agile for his size and a versatile defender. He's a good rim protector. He works as a finisher on offense, as well as thriving in the P&R game. He's improved as a playmaker and free throw shooter. He's still raw but he's got amazing potential.
