Onfire1116 walks into the draft room and sits next to his colleague, Troy Weaver, previous gm for Detroit, now Gm of the Tampa Bay Sharks.
TW: Hey, OnFire. How does it feel to take control of the smallest team in the NBA?
OnFire stays silent
TW: Pshh, this draft is stacked anyway so we will see who gets the better team I guess.
In a matter of time, the draft begins. It’s the most stacked fantasy draft ever despite each team getting 10 protections. Troy smirks when he sees he has the first pick. TW goes first with Jalen Duden.
TW: How did they let this guy go?? I knew I was a better GM.
OnFire has a tough pick. He looks at the board and then selects OG Anunoby. Followed by a Desmond Bane. Weaver still looks confident.
TW: Let me get Jimmy Butler, and to make matters worse, Brandon Miller.
Troy smirks. OnFire cusses himself out. How did he overlook Miller!? It’s fine his next pick will be good. Kelvin Johnson goes to Albuquerque, followed by Fred Vanvleet. Weaver is cockier than ever. After picking up Paul George and then young center Jalen Smith, Weavers smile begins to fade. He has hardly any cap space left! OnFire thinks hard about his next pick.
OF: Give me Aaron Wiggins. And let’s buddy him up with 24 year old Keon Ellis.
Rob Dill Pickle and TK McConnel head to Tampa as Jordan Clarkson and Brandon Boston Jr. go to the Asparagus. And then Troy Weaver folds.
TW: Bradley Beal...
The guy OnFire was ignoring all draft because of his contract just went to the team that had the least cap space! Perfect for him. Max Strus is picked up by Tampa Bay next. Albu goes for two stretch bigs next, Chris Boucher and Mohammad Gueye.
TW: Trendon Watford, and I know you were eyeing him... give me Brandon Williams.
OnFire cusses when he sees Williams go off the board but he tries to counter.
OF: Johnathan Isaac and Tristan Vukcevic.
TW: Vuk is on a two-way, what are you doing?
Troy laughs before selecting Zeke Nnaji and Torrey Craig. Afterwards, OnFire brings the Albuquerque Asparagus two more PG’s in Scary Terry Rozier and Dalano Banton. To close the draft, the Sharks get Taurean Prince. OnFire is proud of his draft and he can’t wait for things to come.
The next day he gets a call. It’s from Keldon Johnson.
KJ: Hey OnFire!
OF: Hey what’s up?
KJ: I was wondering if I could be traded. I don’t like the idea of being on an expansion team and I think I could use my value elsewhere.
OnFire is hurt, but suddenly he has an idea.
OF: Ok, I’ll call you back.
OnFire calls the Jazz. If he’s gonna get rid of KJ he’s gonna put him in an even worse spot. Terry Rozier and Keldon Johnson for Lauri Marrkhanen and a 2025 second round pick.
A few days later OnFire is talking to his assistant gm about what coach they should get when a g-league forward named Earl Jenkins somehow gets in the conversation as a possible bench player. He has been crushing in the g-league and he wants him to get a chance. They send him an offer, and for a little more money than the Asparagus would prefer Earl Jenkins is officially an Asparagus.
With the first game approaching and still no coach, what does OnFire and the Albuquerque Asparagus do next?
