As you may know, a couple days ago I posted a poll about whether the Finals MVP should be awarded to the best player in the series or the best player on the winning team. I thought about making a poll to determine the Finals MVP in every single year but decided against it considering that it wouldn't change much in history (most of you voted best player on winning team, which has historically been the case with voters). However, one specific OTHER award that we use a ton in all-time rankings (along with All-Star appearances, All-NBA selections, etc.) is the prestigious NBA KIA MVP award. I'm sure this is going to garner much more debate than a Finals MVP series would, as each of you likely have different opinions on who was the best player in a specific season. Should MJ and Kareem have won more NBA MVP awards? Which players won too many? Is voter fatigue a historic issue? Is there really a unanimous MVP? The reason I'm doing this is to let fanspo.com decide for themselves who the best player in a specific season was. Why rely on voters that lived decades ago to make your decision? YOU, the insanely knowledgeable users of this site, can do your due diligence and decide who should win the MVP. We're going to start post NBA/ABA merger with this; I originally intended to do all 75 years but then realized that the MVP award started to be given out in the 1955-56 season (Bob Pettit was the first recipient) and probably most of you (that includes me) doesn't know enough about old players from the 50s & 60s to make a fair evaluation. Voters from the 50s, 60s, &early 70s: we'll give you a pass. But post merger, starting with the 76-77 season, we'll be determining who the real MVP award is. Observations from previous eras will be appreciated; many of us, including me, weren't around for 70s and 80s and 90s basketball and usually rely on a ton of stats and different metrics. This took a ton of hard work (and continuing it will surely be a grind), so thanks for taking a look at this. Now enjoy the polls!
