The Victor Wembanyama All-Defensive Team Discussion

Victor Wembanyama is currently sitting barely inside the top then in DPOY odds. If you told me preseason that a guy who plays just under 30 mins a game is not only leading the NBA in blocks per game, but is also leading the NBA in stocks, was not getting DPOY conversation, I’d assume it’s a small sample size. But no, 31 games into Vic’s career he is emerging as one of the most dominant defensive forces in the NBA. With all the defensive playmaking Wemby is averaging a mere 2.3 fouls per game. The DPOY front runner is averaging 2.8, the second place guy in Chet Holmgren is averaging 2.6, and the third place guy in AD is also averaging 2.6. Wemby is also in the 94th percentile for deflections. Wemby has underrated versatility, he’s weird in the way that a major asset of his is his ability to block perimeter jump shots. He isn’t super laterally quick but he makes up for this with his ability to recover. He has solid on off numbers but the advanced numbers aren’t elite of the elite, but I think we all are in agreement that the major stats ones are flawed, RIP raptor538. The question is how much should team defense factor into the all defensive teams as the Spurs currently have the 29th ranked defense. This brings up the question of how impactful Wemby truly is. At face value he’s the best defender in the league, biggest guy with the best box score statistics. But he isn’t at the point where he can just carry a defense on his own. Part of this is the minute restriction and part of this is age. I have no doubt Wemby will become an all time great defender, but the question is, is he a top ten defender right now?
