Thunder then convert Ajay Mitchell to a 4 year standard contract.
Reason for Thunder: 1) Replacing Aaron Wiggins with Cam Johnson adds a little size and shooting to stretch the floor. 2) Allows them to resign Alex Caruso to his full cap hold for next year and still stay under the luxury tax. Even after signing Ajay Mitchell and both FRP to standard contracts
Reason for Nets: 1) They accelerate their rebuild by moving one of their best veterans, and get value with 2 recent FRPs and 1 future FRP. 2) Can flip Aaron Wiggins, who is a solid role player, to another contender for more value.
Thunder lineup after trade:
Starting: SGA/Wallace/Dort/Jalen Williams/Holmgren
Bench: Mitchell/Joe/Caruso/Johnson/Hartenstein
Other: Jones/Kenrich Williams/Jaylin Williams
This year they fill the bench with minimum salary players and then they have 2 FRPs to fill those spots in the summer.
This might be a slight overpay, but it allows them to keep the team intact for the next 2 years and push for a title or 2 before they have to make a decision on luxury tax spending. They also don't have the roster space to sign Caruso and 3 FRPs for next year, so they are going to have to trade an asset anyways. This trade increases their chances of winning this year, without decreasing their chances in the future.
