Why the Mavs do this:

They turn Tim Hardaway Jr, Markieff Morris, a 2027 swap and a 2025 2nd for Royce O’Neale and Danilo Gallinari. O’Neale offers another great 3+D wing around Luka and Kyrie, and replaces the role of Dorian Finney Smith. Gallinari is more valuable than Morris on their bench, and they get more financial flexibility for next offseason by getting two expirings.

Why the Nets do this:

They turn Royce O’Neale into Landry Shamet and a 2027 swap. O’Neale is unnecessary on their team since they have Finney-Smith and Cam Johnson long term. Shamet offers another shooter on a decent contract and they pick up a pick for a guy they may not extend.

Why the Wizards do this:

They turn Landry Shamet and Danilo Gallinari into Markieff Morris, Tim Hardaway Jr, and a 2025 2nd. Shamet doesn’t seem to be a long term guy for Washington, so they might as well get some picks for him. They swap a 3 year deal for a 2 year deal and pick up an extra 2nd, and since they aren’t gonna compete next year, the 17m doesn’t make a difference. They could also flip Hardaway next offseason if he finishes the year well.
