Starting lineups:
Spurs: Young / Branham / Johnson / PF Signing* / Wembanyama
Hawks: Murray / Vassell / Bogdanovic / Johnson / Capela
Why they do it:
Spurs: Mission is simple, build around Wemby. What sort of player do you need to support a 7'4 unicorn/demigod who can move like a guard and catch lobs from the ceiling? You need a playmaker capable of finding him. You also need to alleviate the scoring burden he will be faced with as he gets better and teams target him more. The man needs a running partner. Enter Trae Young. The undersized guard consistently averages 25 and 10 for the Hawks and I can't see that changing on the Spurs. The pick n roll actions between these two is terrifying to consider. This is the first step in building a contender around the Frenchman. The fit is great for Young too. He can be the main distributor and premier scoring option on the perimeter. And on defense, Wemby makes up for how bad Trae can be. Anyone that gets past Young is going straight into the best shot blocker in the world. It's a perfect match.
Hawks: Some may see this as a rebuild move, I don't see it that way. The Hawks are still set up to be competitive after this trade. You're getting back Vassell, who should be a good fit next to Murray in the backcourt and take some of the scoring load left behind by Trae. You're getting quality bench pieces in Graham, Sochan and Collins. And you get a top 7 pick in this years draft, in a draft that's perfect for a team needing wings or defenders. Not to mention, you get all your picks back from the Murray trade. They have a ton of movable contracts (Hunter, Capela, etc). This trade sets them up for a perfect retool opportunity and a chance to still go back to the play-in next season.
