The premise of the trade is this: LeBron, KD, and Steph want it to happen, the spurs have the chips, and the suns desperately need to get below the 2nd apron.
If you’re the spurs you can’t trade Wembanyama. If you’re LeBron how cool for your son to start on a team like that!!!! If you’re KD and Steph you just want to be competitive. And all benefit from the proximity to Austin, Texas.
The trade should be broken into chunks. I won’t elaborate on those here. The key part however is that as two way contracts come in for the spurs, they must be signed as minimum contracts. The suns benefit by having enough contracts fall off after this year to put them back under the second apron AND they get draft picks they need.
Listen the spurs have 36 picks. This kind of a trade is a big ask so the juice has to be worth the squeeze. As for the spurs, there’s no question it’s profitable. They will forever be the big 3’s final resting place. Each team receives 2 first round picks, a swap, and 2 second round picks. This is more than reasonable, and really is payment for the hassle of the trade as a whole.
The entire league wins from this kind of crazy publicity. Pull this trade off and go out with a bang. Spurs 2025! let’s go Pop!
