The Clippers using their $9.7M TPE on Plumlee would be a smart move for 2 reasons.

First off it would immediately fill their need for size and give the Clippers a strong backup center behind Ivac Zubac. Plumlee is averaging 9 points & 9 boards a game as a starter for the Hornets so far this season.

The main reason it would be wise is Plumlee's expiring contract will be much easier and more beneficial to use in a trade (if needed) then the TPE. With the TPE LA would of been limited to trading for players making $9.7M or less. Plumlee could be traded for a player making up to $12M. Also the TPE can not be combined with other players for salary matching purposes. Plumlee would be able to be dealt with other players before the trade deadline, which opens up many more options for the Clippers

Brandon Boston Jr spends most his time in the G League and the Clips have plenty of wing depth so no major loss there.

This is a win/win trade for the struggling Hornets. Plumlee is a FA after the season and it's unlikely the Hornets plan to bring him back. This trade would open up a starting spot for Nick Richards who has played very well as the backup and open up more minutes for recent #1 picks Mark Williams & Kai Jones. Boston Jr is lighting it up in the G league and his shooting %'s both there and in limited NBA action is off the charts.
