The Spurs are in a unique position. Their number one pick is ready to win now. While I wouldn’t panic like some franchises should, I would make smart deals to put good role players around Wemby. I think this trade does that. Russell was an all-star in Brooklyn, and has seasons where he is really good. While he also struggles I think the Spurs and their system would be good for him. Rui is also a player peaking, he’s a good wing and can score and hit open shots. Both of these guys can be molded into the Spurs system. The cost Keldon Johnson who I don’t think is a great fit next to Vassell neither play make enough to be a 1 and neither are long enough to be a 3. This move I think adds 3 legit pieces for this misfit.
https://fanspo.com/nba/s/general/trades/nU6bnbrEarOfC_/hawks The Spurs do this deal because they get back a young player in Ocongwu. His defense and inside scoring perfectly compliments what Wemby wants to do and that is play perimeter. Whether starting or coming off the bench, he’s going to provide a spark. All for a guy in Zach Collins doesn’t fit the timeline of the Spurs.
