Why They Do It: The Lakers sit at 22-22 and just 9th in the West. They are in desperate need of an upgrade if they even want to make the playoffs, let alone make a run. Enter Dejounte Murray, who they are currently the favorites to land. Murray immediately improves their defense and can fit right in as the starting PG. He's another shot creator next to LeBron James and Anthony Davis. Additionally, the Lakers could let him move over to his natural position, PG, and let Austin Reaves run the SG position. Reports say that the Lakers are willing to give up Jalen Hood-Schifino, their lone tradable FRP in 2029, and a pick swap so this deal makes sense.

Why They Do It: The Dejounte Murray experiment in Atlanta has failed. They brought him in to try and balance out Trae Young’s defending inefficiencies. However, having two ball dominant guards and pushing Murray over to SG has failed. The Hawks are stuck in 10th in the East and don’t look to be competing for anything this year. They are currently projected to pick 9th in the upcoming draft. They are just 3.5 games back on moving up to 6th. It might be best for them to use this as a rebuild year and acquire some potentially valuable picks as well as a young PG in Jalen Hood-Schifino. Fournier has a team option for next year which the Hawks will likely decline, leading him to be a FA.

What They Get Back: D’Angelo Russell
Why They Do It: The Knicks take advantage of the Lakers’ desperation and make out like bandits here. The Hawks aren’t interested in D’Angelo Russell as they don’t need another ball dominant guard. However, the Lakers need to give him up for salary reasons. The Knicks come and take Russell to dump Fournier’s contract for a FRP. The Knicks have been desperate to dump Fournier’s contract so the Hawks take him on for a couple of months and the Knicks in turn agree to take on Russell. This is a huge win for them as he immediately can come in and be an impactful player on this team. Russell is averaging 27/6 on 56/54/100 in his last 5 games and would be a great bench piece for NYK.
