This is somewhat related to the Luka trade. That trade may not be a one off.

Some say the Mavs traded Luka so that he wouldn’t be eligible for the super max on his next contract. I think this is going to be the new trend. Teams trading top stars so they can avoid to pay outrageous super max salaries but get good returns for their star players. I think that is going to become the new norm. But that begs the question… who are the next stars to receive this treatment??

I think Trae Young, Ja Morant, and Tyler Herro are 3 players that could be traded this summer or next season, so their teams avoid their next contracts.
