Indiana brings a high upside forward in MPJ, they have a lot of depth, so they used it to go get MPJ. Smith is trapped behind Jarace Topin Turner Jackson. McConnell is trapped behind Haliburton and Nembhard. Hield is expiring and it may not be wise to pay him since they already have good depth at the SG position.

Nuggets need more defense and bench production. This trade gets them both. Nesmith for defense and can shoot. Smith is a much better backup C than DeAndre Jordan. Hield is a sharpshooting 6th man who can replace some of MPJ's production. And they get a great backup point guard in McConnell who can defend and pass.
