As a Hawks fan, I don't want the Hawks to trade for AD or Giannis, but I came up with this deal to see how the salary matching would work. The trade would need to happen after December 15th.
Here is why each side might make this trade with analysis:
MAVERICKS: With the players they are getting, they could compete for a play-in spot when Kyrie returns (I wouldn't) or tank the rest of the season away. The Porzingis, Kennard, and Thomas contracts expire after the season so they could let them walk or give extensions. I would also look at rerouting Porzingis and Kennard to different teams before the deadline. The only extension that makes some sense long-term is for Cam Thomas to juice the offense. The Mavericks get rid of D'Angelo Russell who is out of the rotation. He could seek a buyout with the Jazz. Dwight Powell is in the trade only for salary matching purposes. The addition of Svi Mykhailiuk from the Jazz offers more shooting for Dallas, but he would still have a few years left on his contract. The Mavericks would have to waive a player for this trade to work and it makes the most sense to waive Dante Exum since he is out for the rest of the season.
HAWKS: The Atlanta Hawks swing big with this trade, but they have to give up Risacher. The picks traded to the Mavericks aren't very good but it's something. The Hawks keep the Pelicans/Bucks 2026 pick. The Hawks do get their 2nd round picks back from the Nets in this deal. Anthony Davis (when healthy) makes the Hawks a bigger threat in the East, while keeping Trae and Jalen. The Hawks would have to sign two free agents in this trade, which is a bit unusual (ignore the specific players signed). The Hawks may have not gotten enough value back in exchange for Risacher.
JAZZ: I honestly just threw them in this trade but they get the 2030 PHI 2nd round pick from the Mavericks with the addition of D'Angelo Russell. It makes the most sense for the Jazz here to either trade Russell to another team or see if he can get a buyout.
NETS: The Nets are already loaded with guards on the roster, so adding a wing in Risacher (in exchange for Thomas) who was the #1 pick in last year's draft strengthens the rebuild. He gets more of an opportunity in Brooklyn compared to Atlanta.
I'd like to hear your thoughts on this trade. It does seem a bit unusual. Would you do this?
