The Hawks have seemingly been wanting to move John Collins for years. They ended up signing him to a fat 4 year deal that currently pays him into the 25-26 season at about 23-26 million per year. At this point, Collins is having his worst season of his career and isn't a good fit on this Hawks roster. It's hard to gage what Collins value will be on the open market given his production this year and his large long term salary.

I think a team like the Jazz should take a swing on him if the asking price is reasonable. Collins and Markannen isn't the most ideal fit, but the Jazz should be prioritizing young players and assets instead of worrying about roster construction this early in a rebuild. By adding Collins, they can hope to turn his career around and get him producing close to the 20 ppg scorer he was just a couple years into his NBA career. The risk is that his decline is real and that he will be a large negative contract for multiple years.

TLDR

Why the Jazz do it:

They take a swing on a 25 yr old player and hope he returns to form.

Why the Hawks do it:

The Hawks get off a large long term contract and pick up 2 expiring contract rotation players (or close to it) who can both shoot the ball extremely well from 3. (Hawks are shooting 29th in the league in 3pt% as of 12/12/22)
