So far, the Lakers are striking out on free agency and making any sign and trades happen, or any trades in general. LeBron’s frustration is growing after he was willing to take a pay cut, but not anymore.

Lots of clear Rich Paul/Klutch Sports leaks out there for Lakers trade talks towards two of his clients. Jerami Grant and Collin Sexton. In Grant’s case, it’s unlikely a deal gets done with that contract. The Lakers don’t have the assets to make it work.

Pivot to Sexton, and that’s a deal that can get done. Not only that, he’s an underrated guard who can be a really strong fit, forming a trio with James and Davis. Danny Ainge will do anything to continue to stockpile first round picks for the Utah Jazz to eventually make his star move.

This has to be worth it for the Jazz. They need not just one, but two valuable trade assets to give up Sexton and take on the contracts to make it work. Hence, Reaves gets shipped to Utah along with the coveted 2029 1st rounder. Ainge is happy to stockpile towards an eventual big star move down the line, adding Reaves to the same position of a starter that you’re losing.

In adding Sexton, the Lakers pair him in a backcourt with D’Angelo Russell, knowing it’s going to continue to be tough to flip him for anything that’s a net positive. They roll with him to round out his final contract year.
