In a blockbuster three-team deal finalized just hours before the NBA’s trade deadline, the Los Angeles Lakers have acquired All-Star guard Dejounte Murray from the Atlanta Hawks and two-way forward Dorian Finney-Smith from the Brooklyn Nets.

The Hawks, who became motivated to find Murray a new home amidst a below-.500 season, are acquiring a handful of players who bolster their depth, help their cap flexibility, and better complement centerpiece Trae Young in Rui Hachimura, Spencer Dinwiddie, and Royce O’Neale — a longtime favorite of head coach Quin Snyder.

The Hawks also deepened their asset pool, acquiring the Lakers’ top-3 protected 2029 1st round pick and a 2027 first-round pick from Brooklyn whose swap rights are owned by the Houston Rockets.

For the Nets, 26 year-old Deandre Hunter offers a seamless fit alongside their wing duo of Mikal Bridges and Cameron Johnson, and better matches the timeline of their young core. The franchise also reunites with point guard D’Angelo Russell who earned his one and only All-Star nod while playing for the franchise in the 2018-19 season. Rookie Jalen Hood-Schfino offers youth, size, and upside at the point guard position that the team hopes can develop into an important part of their core down the line.

The Lakers, who aggressively pursued a bevy of deals over the last 48 hours, believe Murray offers a balance of playmaking, defense and athleticism they have lacked in the backcourt during the LeBron and Anthony Davis-era and Finney-Smith slots in as the quintessential 3-and-D wing they have long coveted.
