ISIAH COLLIER BREAKDOWN

Scouting Report:

DRIVING/FINISHING

At a stout 6ft 2 Isiah colliers major selling point is his elite rim pressure. He’s a bursty athlete with the size to not get bumped off and finish through the contact. While his handle needs to be tightened to avoid some of the turnovers he had at USC this year he showed bright and consistent flashes of self creation using it. His change of direction is quick and he is great at shifting his weight low quickly to explode to the rim. He finished over 50 percent at the rim using a medley of finishes with both hands. He will need to build upon his handle as in the NBA his strength won’t be enough to consistently get rim attempts. His explosion and already deep bag gives me optimism he’ll be an elite rim attacker very early in his NBA career. I also have optimism he will shoot more floaters as he shot more in the games I watched later in the year than he did pre injury.

SHOOTING

At face value his shooting is a weakness. He only shot 32 percent from three and 67 percent from the line. However, the second half of the season when his volume lowered, he shot over 40 percent from three. He is a versatile shooter who is not just taking catch and shoot threes, he takes a solid amount of pull ups and step backs. These shots weren’t efficient but he had confidence taking them. Pair this with his proven touch, and he has a real path to becoming a shooter.

Playmaking

Collier has some scoring blindness. This made his drive less effective as he was not a great drive and kick player. His delivery on his passes has not caught up to his vision. He found some advanced reeds but could only make the play half of the time. He is a great dump off passer and throws the occasional skip pass. When running the pick and roll he was very turnover prone and tried risky pocket passes intro defenses when he couldn’t make a decision. If his float game improves, he will be able to make the reeds easier for himself as the defense will have to collapse on him or he’ll get easy baskets.

DEFENSE

He’s a good 1 on 1 defender. He is quick laterally and has a strong base preventing him from getting thrown off by contact. He has an inconsistent motor but when he’s trying he’s impactful. He has fast processing speed and is active in help and walled off many drives when his teammates got beat. He gambles a bit too much and doesn’t handle screens well. Off the ball his screen navigation limits him and he sometimes overplays in the point of attack.

CONCLUSION

I don’t think Collier will be great as a rookie as he still needs to develop a jumpshot and become a better playmaker. Hes too short for sg and not ready to play point. However, because I have reasons to believe he can become a good passer and shooter I think his upside and chance to be the best player in the class warrant a high pick. I don’t think he is completely raw either. I am fairly confident his driving will be great early on.
