This trade makes sense if the Mavs don't win and Luka gets desperate and asks for the trade. Something is fishy in Dallas, as Mark Cuban sold most of his part of the team, which leads us to believe that Mark is afraid that Luka will ask for the trade and the team will lose value.

This trade is beneficial for both parts, the Knicks get one more important piece to be contenders and the Mavs get great players in exchange for Luka and receive valuable picks that can be useful in the short-mid term, a 1st rounder from the Wizzards, which has a lot of value for the poor results of the team and two other picks that although they do not have the same value as the above mentioned, they are still valuable pieces for future trades if Dallas would like to start a reconstruction now that they don't have Luka.

With this trade New York could become a top 7 team in the league and Dallas receives assets for a hypothetical rebuild.
