You guys did this… https://fanspo.com/nba/s/general/p/GL2oBp4upvUJD9/choose-a-player-for-my-entertainment- but sorry this is so short.
Shoutout to everyone who wanted this one because Yang Hansen has one of the most interesting stories out of recent basketball prospects. A lot of fans outside of China had almost no idea who he was a few years ago, and then all of a sudden his name started showing up everywhere. One day people are scrolling through basketball clips, then suddenly they see a 7'1" center throwing passes that look like something a guard would make 😭 and immediately people started paying attention.
Yang Hansen was born in Zibo, China, and his basketball journey started pretty early. Unlike some players who are labeled future stars before they even become teenagers, Yang's rise felt slower and more natural. He wasn't one of those names where everybody already knew exactly who he was from day one. Instead, his game kept developing little by little and every year there was something new getting added.
As he got older, Yang eventually entered the Qingdao youth system, which became a huge step for him. This is where he started playing against stronger competition and where people really began noticing that there was something different about his game. At first, people obviously noticed the height because a 7'1" teenager is going to stand out no matter what, but after watching him longer, that wasn't the only thing getting attention.
Usually when people think about a player that tall, they imagine someone standing near the basket, grabbing rebounds, blocking shots and getting easy points around the rim. Basically the normal giant center role. Yang could do those things too, but he also started showing flashes of something else. His passing started catching people off guard because some of the reads he was making honestly didn't look normal for somebody his size.
There were clips where Yang would grab a rebound and immediately throw a pass up the floor that looked more like something a point guard would do. Then there were possessions where he would read double teams and find open teammates before defenses could react. People started watching and thinking wait a second, this dude sees the floor pretty well 😭
As Yang kept progressing through youth basketball, success started coming with it too. In 2021, he helped lead his team to a U17 National Championship and earned Best Defensive Player honors. Winning obviously mattered, but people were also paying attention to how he was impacting games. It wasn't just scoring or size carrying him.
The next year things got even better. His team repeated as champions and Yang earned MVP honors. At that point, people weren't just talking about him as some tall prospect with potential anymore. There was actual production behind everything and his development was becoming harder to ignore.
Eventually Yang reached the professional level with the Qingdao Eagles in the CBA, and this is where things usually get real for young players. Youth basketball and professional basketball are two completely different worlds. Everything moves faster, defenders are smarter, and mistakes get punished way quicker.
But for someone stepping into that environment at a young age, Yang didn't really look overwhelmed. He showed confidence and had moments where he looked comfortable against players with way more experience. For a lot of young players, you can almost see them trying to survive games early on. Yang looked more like he was trying to figure out how much he could actually do.
During his rookie season, Yang put together impressive numbers while impacting both sides of the floor. He could score inside, protect the rim, rebound and still show flashes of that passing ability people liked so much. Then he ended up winning Rookie of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year, which is pretty insane when you actually think about it 🤯
As Yang kept producing, scouts started showing up more and more. Suddenly a player casual fans barely knew before was getting mentioned in draft discussions. More clips started spreading online, more people started debating his future and now everyone had an opinion. Some people were completely sold on him. They saw a modern center with skill, size and feel for the game. Other people weren't fully convinced yet because they had questions about how his athleticism and movement would translate against NBA players.
Then came the NBA Draft, and this was where things got crazy. A lot of projections had Yang going later, while some people weren't even fully sure where he would land. Fans had predictions, analysts had predictions, and honestly it felt like nobody completely knew what was going to happen
Then his name got called earlier than a lot of people expected and social media instantly exploded. People everywhere were typing things like "WAIT WHAT"😭😭😭because the reactions happened almost immediately. Some fans loved it while others looked completely confused for like five minutes straight
Now Yang enters a completely different stage of basketball. The NBA pace is faster, players are stronger and every weakness gets exposed way more often. Young big men usually need time because that adjustment isn't easy, especially for international prospects.
But even with all of that, people still keep coming back to the same things that made Yang interesting in the first place. The passing. The moments where he makes plays that don't really look normal for someone his size.Right now Yang Hansen feels like one of those players where nobody fully knows what the final result looks like yet, and honestly that might be what makes him interesting. Sometimes the players people are arguing about the most end up becoming the ones everybody remembers.
