Background:
Growing up in both Georgia and Florida, Newell attended Montverde Academy, where he played on that stacked Montverde squad. He committed to Georgia, becoming their highest ranked recruit since Anthony Edwards. As a freshman, Newell would emerge as Georgia’s #1 option, leading them to the NCAA tournament.
Pros:
Explosive leap
Elite finisher
Great lob threat
Great rim protector
Great perimeter defender, total package in that regard
Good jump shot potential
Gives great effort
Cons:
Careless passer
Can become sloppy at times
Needs to drastically improve shooting
Summary:
Newell is already an elite lob threat, and he has the potential to become an elite defender, especially on the perimeter. He does need to improve his mechanics and shooting a lot, however. His ceiling I’d argue is an all-star caliber player who has the potential to be a team’s primary defender, and could be a perennial all-defense guy and could be one of the top contenders for DPOY in a few years. His floor is probably the primary defensive spark from the bench who won’t be contributing offensively.
