Needs going into Draft ?
someone who can play at starting 4, backup 5 or an excellent playmaker and 3pt shooting. Currently we have Jacob, Luka and Eubanks as big's on our roster and Dejountey and White as the only proven palymakers
So why we did not select a big ?
If I look at the roster, the immediate need I see is a starting stretch 4. Luka can do that but he is not ready to take starting role yet. We had Sengun, Kai, Garuba, Isiah at pick 12. None of them can stretch the floor right away which makes me think they already have someone on mind in free agency. May be John Collins (Career 38% 3PT shooter) or Lauri Markkanen (36.6) or Kuzma (34%)
Why josh Primo?
Primo was rising on the draft boards. I think most GM's valued a his play making potential, age and outside shooting (38% 3 pt). Because of his age, He could be sent to G-league for an year and can be developed under teams supervision. His college coach said his stats could have been much better had he not sacrificed for his team playing off the ball. So essentially we took a next years lottery pick in this draft who could be developed under teams supervision.
Why not trade back if team was fixed on Primo?
From what I heard, OKC had their eyes set on Primo for 16th pick. They did same thing with Aleksej Pekusevski last year. I do not see an option where we could have got him by trading down. Brian Wright also confirmed that they made best selection based on intel they had.
What about frontcourt additions on the roster?
Brian Wright said they will be addressing that in free agency. I believe they will do a couple of 1 year deals so that they can maintain salary cap for 2022.
When will I be pissed ?
If they bring back Demar, Rudy Gay or any other veteran blocking development of the youngsters
Conclusion: I won't judge Spurs until they complete the roster construction.
