Spurs Offseason

SUCCESS

The Spurs are in a big offseason for building around Victor Wembanyama. They already acquired Deaaron Fox, but still have a ton of assets disposable. Even if they stay put, they are set up well, but I see them making some outside the box moves that give San Antonio a lot better role players while maintaining there picks and good flexibility.

Trade #1 Get John Collins

Spurs get: John Collins, #53 Jazz get: Devin Vassell, 2028 most favorable swap with Boston, #38

This would be a huge get for San Antonio as John Collins had a super underratedly great year last year in his 40 games, averaging 19-8 on super efficiency. Giving up the Hawks pick hurts, but since its top 10 protected it doesn't matter too much to the wanting to contend Spurs. Vassal and Collins are in similar stratospheres when talking about the level of player, but Collins is a little better, and you're only committing one year on his contract as opposed to four years on Vassell's. The Jazz get a good asset in the Hawks pick, get a good player in Vassell that plays better when having better opportunity, and move up in the 2nd round.

Trade #2 Trade for Herb Jones

Spurs get: Herb Jones Pels get: Keldon Johnson, #14 pick, 2026 swap most favorable with Hawks, three 2nds, two of them very early second next year

Sorry to any Pelicans fans seeing this thinking it's crazy to trade Herb, but the reality is this offseason this team will go into a soft reset, trading a few guys for picks. We already saw this with the Brandon Ingram trade, not willing to give him $30 million a year. I think Herb could be one of those guys they trade, but only for the right price. In this trade they get a player in Keldon Johnson who is a year younger, and is the opposite archetype than Herb, a good offensive player but was trash defensively this season, but has shown defensive promise. They also get pick #14 which in a good draft is very valuable, and an extra pick that will likely be in the mid-late teens. This kickstarts a retool, with that #14 pick likely being a forward, while stacking extra picks and a good player in Keldon Johnson. This is good for obvious reasons for San Antonio, getting there forward for the future in one of the best defenders in the league, and a guy who shot 41% from three in 2024, his last healthy season.

Draft

2 Drafting Dylan Harper

This is the obvious choice, as Harper is a tall guard with a beautiful handle and is by far the second best player in this class, out dueling his teammate from Rutgers Ace Bailey. Dylan would be #1 overall in some drafts, including the draft last year. There are big question marks around the fit of a Fox/Castle/Harper guard rotation and how that would work, but that is a good problem to have.

53 Amari Williams

Solid big man from Kentucky, played well in the tournament. Can provide some big man depth, more league ready player at this selection.

Free Agency

Resign Sandro Mamukelashveli and Charles Bassey

This team needs the big man depth, as we saw these two injured last year while Wemby was hurt and they were turning to Bismarck Biyombo. Yikes. Sandro has a good offensive skillset that matches next to Wemby. Bassey is solid and is another big body to have.

Sign Kevon Looney

Kevon Looney is a very solid backup big who is a great screen setter and rebounder, and can allow Wemby to play on the perimeter as the four man at times. Kevon won't give you much offensively but will do all the little things contributing to winning.

PG: DeAaron Fox SG: Stephon Castle SF: Herb Jones PF: John Collins C: Victor Wembanyama

Bench Dylan Harper, Harrison Barnes, Jeremy Sochan, Kevon Looney, Julian Champangnie, Sandro Mamukelashvili, Charles Bassey, Amari Williams, Malaki Branham, Blake Wesley

These moves would give the Spurs a team that fits around Wemby long term, and also provides a deep bench. This team would definitely be a playoff team next season, that could reach for big heights in the Wild West.
